Funny: Mouse sets house on fire.

I was sort of hoping that the thread would contain something along the lines of "Rare breed of fire-breathing mouse terrorises small Dorset village", but I guess this is just as good!

    Religion/Spritial beliefs in bushcraft??

Haha, quote of the week, surely! Anyway, I'm a committed atheist in every way. To me, life is wonderfully rich and diverse enough insofar as I can experience it from day to day, without the need to add to it any spiritual stuff that I can't.

Just to prove you can't be objective about these things...

Look at a typical example of the front page... At first glance, it seems we're all hard drinking weapon-obsessed arsonists! This thread was intended as light-hearted, but got me thinking about the perception of bushcraft to the 'average Joe', as it were: I think we can all recall...

    Testing your winter skills...

... anyone else been doing this? I find this time of the year to be the best time to go out and do a proper back-woods camp: everything's much more epic! I'll be camping out tomorrow night, where BBC weather tells me I can expect a good minus 2 celcius, which should be, errr, cool! :p I...

    Bushcraft With Health Problems/Disabilities

Whittle! It's basically the sum total of what many of us get up to by the firelight in the woods, I'd imagine, and it's a great way to kill time on an evening at home. Experience in carving is invaluable, I find, as it improves your knife skills beyond measure and provides plenty of decoration...

    2005 retrospective

Oh, it has defintiely been a big year for me! Highpoint: Going off to University! (I've only just got back, so 'scuse my absence!) It's been really great so far, but I've yet to meet anyone who'd be up for a good ol' bit of backwoods camping; I'll have to get my preacher-hat on and bite them...

    Army Bergan

Sounds like PLCE to me; great bit of kit! Arrr, when I got my PLCE sack it didn't have the frame, either, but luckily where I live (Aldershot) you can often find things like that being practically given away at car boot sales and the like. Guess that's not much help to you, though! :P

    Oh to be a Celt

I'd rather be a viking than a Celt, methinks, although my heirtage is almost entirely Scotch and Irish (and what little is left came over with the Norman conquest, so I guess I'm a viking somewhere down the line :p ). Vikings ruled, and don't anyone try telling me that there were no Norsemen...

    Ants the Size Of Cats!!!!

We get the beggars here, for sure, and I can tell you first-hand that they can give you a pretty sore bite if they want to! I guess that's what you get for spending your foolhardy childhood years up in the woods, though :-\.

    Oxtail

Thanks for the replies, people, it's a-stewing as we speak :D. Bargain meat ROCKS.

    Oxtail

I just picked up a load of oxtail in the bargain bin at Tesco for 30p and don't really know what to do with it. It's not really bushcrafty, but I figured that here's as good a place as any to ask for suggestions :) My big idea is: cook it all up into a stew with some swede, carrot, potato...

    Bushcrafting the hard way....

I saw about this on the telly. It was awesome! Gave me some ideas for when I start uni next month... who needs to pay £3000 a year for accomodation when you can live in the woods and spend all the money on kit?! ... maybe not.

    Need some imput

Great job on those; they look like something I'd put up on my wall. While that is, of course, a compliment, it has the downside of meaning that I probably wouldn't use them; they definitely seem stout and workmanlike, but to my British sensibilites they look more suited to fighting off invading...

    Sharpening a spoon knife

I have a nice little ceramic rod (about 1/2" diameter, 4" long) that does the inside nicely. Only problem is, I have no idea where it came from! Well, as long as you know that such things exist, you can keep on the lookout for them.

    Unbelievable

Because that's what our law says? If my grandmother had heard me say that she would reply with something along the lines of "That's not the atitude, sonny-jim!". If everyone thought "Ah, sod it, I'll just throw my junk all over the place; what does a little crisp packet/ fag-end/ beer can...
