Heading to Toronto this easter...things to do?

If you have kids, they will love wandering around Queen Street west area, just west of City Hall-artsy, cool shops and great spot to people watch. The Islands there are nice to wander around with a short ferry trip to get there although the nude beach there may be a tad chilly that time of...

what's turned your head this year?

By far the best bit o' kit I picked up this year was a US canteen and canteen cup. I had always used nalgene bottles and a regular stainless steel mug but this set up is brilliant. I have used it as a bailer, pot, bowl, bait holder, berry holder and actually as a cup. It also rides so well on...

    Your lowest point...

My first solo backpacking trip. The first night after just a few kms I started thinking 'what the heck am I doing here?' I almost turned back several times. I brought too much stuff and quickly got tired. I had a one man tent I had never tried and felt like a nylon coffin. It rained. I...

    Ka Bar Kukri

Has anyone tried a KaBar Kukri. The price seems decent and the sheath not too bad. I was just wondering how it may compare to the Cold Steel Kukri or similar. I am looking to stop carrying the ax or hatchet when camping out in the Canadian woods. FarPoint -All those who wander are not lost-

    spoon animation

Cool animation. My question is how to keep carved spoon from splitting as it dries. Should I keep it in a plastic bag with some oil or water, treat is somehow or use already cured wood? Any advice would be appreciated. -FarPoint All those who wander are not lost.

    fondue cooker

Has anyone used a stove from a fondue set as a burner? They seem like a pop can stove only stronger and with the material inside to keep the meths from sloshing around. They also are light and come with the ring on top to control the heat a bit. Also, in the shops you can buy fondue fuel-am I...

US canteen cup vs Crusader Cup

One quick note-a company in the US makes a good looking lid for the US canteen cup. You can find it on Evil-Bay but here is their company website. http://www.heavycoverinc.com/products.html FarPoint

US canteen cup vs Crusader Cup

Thanks Gang-some good insights. I think I may go with the US version-lighter and smaller is always a good thing when you have to lug it around. FarPoint

US canteen cup vs Crusader Cup

Does anyone have any thoughts on the US canteen cup/canteen/cooker vs the NATO water bottle/crusader cup/cooker? The US version is slightly smaller at 500ml instead of the 750 or so for the Crusader. Both are stainless steel but the US version is so much cheaper. Anyone have any preference or...

    where did your username comefrom

I live in Canada and figure that is a bit of distance from BushcraftUK central command. Also as a photojournalist, I try to grab every opportunity I can to get as far away from anywhere as possible, particularly to the arctic or unexplored jungle or the like. The only other nickname I ever...

    Canadian bushcraft

Hey Canadian Bushcrafters, a new site was started a few weeks ago at http://cbolonline.ning.com/ as a gathering place for Canadian Bushcrafters. Not much there at the moment but a little interest could really get it going. It was started by Chris Clarke. Have a look if you get a chance...

    drop possibl pouch

Does anyone see any problems with making a leather possibles pouch with a few inches drop from the belt? I want to be able to keep it on my belt while have a pack and hip belt on. Most patterns and pouches I see are tight to the belt to keep them from flopping around but it is a pain to put...

Your most sentimental piece of kit

Great thread. My most sentimental bit of kit that still goes with me everywhere is an old knife, fork and spoon. They are full sized, extremely lightweight aluminum and battered to hell. The fit together with a great little locking mechanism-a type of lever on the side to hold them together...

    "Elvenising" my equipment.

We can all get serious about this bottle, that fabric and the like but we do have to keep in mind that we are doing all this to have a bit of fun. Much as I like some of my space age kit, there are many bits and pieces I can easily do without or replace with lighter or better materials. I want...
