Closed cell foam sleep mat for winter use?

Yeah, I've never been a fan of blowing into mats just for that reason. I use a roll top bag that fills the mat in a couple of squeezes: https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/equipment-c3/sleeping-mats-c58/mat-accessories-c60/klymit-rapid-air-pump-push-pull-valve-p12044

Closed cell foam sleep mat for winter use?

This is my approach too. I use the Savotta under my bivvi and I have a Klimit Inertia Ozone mat for inside. The Klimit only adds 260g and offers much improved comfort and has a built in pillow plus increases the insulation too. Has worked well for me down to -14 which is the lowest I've managed...

    What did you buy today?

Just got a new winter bag. Tundra Simply Green -15. Great bit of kit for the price. They originally retailed at £200 but are now discontinued. Tundra still have a few knocking about and I got it for £50. Here's the link to the -25 bag. The info s the same other than temp rating, slightly...

    dd tarp and spiked poles?

I just twist the pole a couple of times through the loop and it tightens nicely in it.

What sleeping bags do you own?

I've got an Exped dreamwalker synthetic for my summer bag. A Danish army M90 for my 3 season and I combine the two for my winter kit. The dreamwalker can be opened at the foot end and has arm holes so is great for getting a morning brew on.

    dyed mtp smock

I like the design of the smock but felt the MTP was a bit light and I prefer more muted colours. I did want it a little darker than this and I did use the cotton dye too but I don't think I used enough to get the result I wanted. I may leave it a few days as it may grow on me but if not I'll...

    dyed mtp smock

So I dyed my MTP smock with brown Idye and this is the result. It was pretty hard as the DWR treatment on the outside was impenetrable and the MVP dropliner in the inside also proved difficult to bypass but I managed to pour some dye in via the drip skirt. Not as dark as I wanted an I only used...

Adding Water to Meths for Trangia Stove

I've used trangias for many years and have added water and not. Not really noticed any difference with either temperature or amount of soot so I now don't add any water as it didn't seem to make a difference for me. I found making sure that the burner is lit from the jets only and not the centre...

Backpacking Dinner for Two Cooking Kits

I'd go with Trangia too. Gas is more controllable but meths is more fun! I got a bargain at TK Maxx on my Trangia set. I think it cost me £25 for the 27 with gas burner and I already had the meths burner so good flexibility. If you got that route, I'd suggest buying the set with gas burner and...

Helikon, new kit on the block?

Good find. Charity shops are great for cheap gear. I got a pair of Karrimor SF cold weather boots that looked unworn for 2.50! Had a few good fleeces too.

    new DIY wood gassification stove

Nice work. I've a few tea caddies floating about with lids and are stainless too so I may well have another go and use your idea if I can get them to nest. Cheers.:You_Rock_

Hobo Stove Gallery (Probably picture heavy)

This is a quick one I knocked together to compare against a DIY gassifier. It's a marmalade can with a cut up coat hanger acting as both legs and pan stands. It fits well around my tatonka mug and Nalgene bottle but as I made it in a hurry, the drilled holes have sharp edges which catch a bit...

    new DIY wood gassification stove

I've got loads of tins lying around that need to make their way to a shed project I run. I was a bit bored this afternoon and so I created a wood gasification stove. I've been a bit dubious about whether they are better than simple hobo stoves but thought I'd investigate to see. I made a simple...

    Hello from Oldham

Have been lurking foe a while and felt it was time to say hello! I live in Oldham and work part time so I luckily have time to get out and about. I've just got back into bushcraft after several years away due to work and family stuff. I've now stopped shift work and my kids are older so they can...
