    Ale Stillage

So, as time beat me, I've made a very no frills version with screws exposed - but it does the job. Just need to sand it down and it'll be ready for the party. Pics are on twitter here: https://twitter.com/owencamera/status/470983662834827265

    Ale Stillage

Thanks, both. Yes, I think it'll go in one sitting, so tilting will be needed. I'll have a bash and show you what I come up with.

    Ale Stillage

Hi guys I've bought a firkin of ale for a party next weekend and out of 'wanting to do something syndrome', I am looking to craft a stillage rack for it. Has anybody made one before? Any tips or pics that could guide me would be much appreciated! cheers Owen

    Ageing wood

Ha! I assure you it doesn't in reality. Granted, it's still markedly different to the other 2, but I will work away at it slowly until they're better matches!

    Ageing wood

Right. I have made a start on it. I went at the edges with a key and a small stone I found whilst walking the dogs this morning, I then smoothed the edges a bit with a hammer. I mixed some boiling water with a tiny bit of gravy browning, and slapped it on. Let it dry out then rubbed the cut end...

    Ageing wood

Thanks, Toddy. Good suggestion on the boiling water!! And dry dirt with a hammer sounds good too. Thanks, Guys. They were never creosoted - in my experience, most scaff planks are left untreated, any preservatives tend to be added after sale by scaffolding companies. Luckily, these ones never...

    Ageing wood

Thanks guys. Will have a bash at it today and let you know how I get along.

    Ageing wood

Ha. Thanks. I did contemplate running a rough stone over the edge. I guess that's similar to a brick?! Thanks.

    Ageing wood

The cement is a good shout! Thanks. Just thought that I could use a rasp to rough the edges up. Good idea?

    Ageing wood

Hi guys. I recently salvaged some old scaffolding boards, and turned them into a couple of 'rustic'/'shabby' shelves for my lounge. They sanded down nicely and look great. Only slight annoyance is that I've used 3 boards to get the desired width. As a result, one of the ends of the planks is...

    Working Driftwood

Thanks. Yes - the grain on this piece is beautiful and I'm trying to carve to complement it. I'm sure I have some linseed oil lying about from my cricket days - perhaps I'll give that a try rather than the teak oil. Thanks - I'll post photos once I'm finally done.

    Working Driftwood

Thanks Stuart. I guess I don't know what I want to do with the finish yet. I like the rugged un-even finish of the driftwood, but once I've finished carving, I reckon I'm going to need to sand off most of the original exterior for uniformity's sake. Think i'll go with a liberal coating of...

    Working Driftwood

Hi guys and gals, I've had a piece of driftwood lying around the house for about five years now, bored, today I started to work it into a traditional welsh love spoon. Lacking any of the correct tools, I've hacked at it for hours with my trusty Stanley knife - only slicing myself open once...

Great, thanks. Will get it done on the weekend.

    Waterproofing Leather Hat

My old Argentinian leather goucho hat isn't repelling water like it used to. It holds it off for a bit before it eventually soaks into the leather leaving a mark - until it thoroughly dries out. I've bought some Nikwax Waterproofing Wax Cream after looking through this forum. Can't find any...

    grass snakes out already

http://twitpic.com/3wocks Here's a picture of the dog's bitten area. It was twice the size initially but the vet has drained it. It's gone red and sore now because the dog is licking it a lot. Hope this is of use to you.

    Waterproofing a Leather Tankard

Done - and seems to be working. Thanks for all of your advice guys. Will raise an ale to you all tonight during the rugby.

    grass snakes out already

From my understanding of the events - the dog was digging a burrow on the common then yelped. The owner saw a snake disappearing back down into the burrow. I'm guessing the dog must have disturbed it's hibernation. In terms of the dog's health. It went very ill very quickly, was rushed to...
