    Elizabethan Ale Service

All your creations are really inspiring me to have a go. I've always hankered after one of those bottles like you can buy in france to hold wine, on a sling . But it would be far better to have one with handstitched, proofed leather. Lovely work!

    Woollen Jacket

I'm not going to bid on it because of the huge amount of postage. It does give me something to search for on the UK ebay. This is a long time search, i'm in no real hurry

    Woollen Jacket

I'm looking for a woolen jacket. It is to replace a fantastic button up shirt type one I found in a charity shop. My last one was button up with a high fold down collar, was lightweight and relatively water resistant. I'm really mourning its loss and am looking for a cheap replacement. I'm open...

Razor Strop Fungus for sharpening copper

The copper is 99.7% pure. However, the pieces are small (approx. 5cm diameter) and so would probably not be suitable. I'm more focused on looking at the various different uses of the fungus than what these actual pieces would have been used for, so all this imformation is useful. Thanks guys.

That is a possiblity, but he also carried prepared amadou, so this is unlikely.

Razor Strop Fungus for sharpening copper

I am writing an essay on Otzi the iceman. Found with his body were 2 pieces of birch polypore (razor strop fungus). I am postulating possible uses for this. One is its antiseptic properties, but I was wondering if it would be possible to use it a strop for his copper axe. I assume so, but...

    Kuksa question

Cheers for all the advice. This piece splits reasonably easily but is still fairly dense. However, it is an attractive piece of wood and is intended more to learn the techniques than function as a vessel. And it is great fun! What other woods are good alternatives? Presumably anything...

    Kuksa question

I've recently started carving my first kuksa. I'm making it out of a sawn piece of timber about 3ft x 3" by 4". It was found in a skip and i'm not sure what kind of wood it is. Its definately deciduous and is perfectly straight grained and fantasticly easy to carve. I've started out by...

    Bruce Parry on radio 4

You can listen again to Bruce Parry and Michael Palin on 'Excess Baggage' on the radio 4 website. The interview is a little more highbrow than the radio 1 interview.

    Hand made Pump Drill

Very nice indeed! Mine uses a 12" squared off piece of wood about 1" x 1" instead of a rounded fly-wheel. Easier to make, you just have to watch out for the spinning ends touching the ground.

    Which wood for spoon?

Hawthorns hard as anything. I used willow for my first spoon. Cuts like butter even when bone dry.

    A bow of my own

It's important to make sure you cut through as few growth rings as possible as this will significantly weaken the bow.

    Jade

Not just inuits. There was a lovely jadeite axe head found on the Somerset levels just downhill from my house. The raw material came from the French alps originally and is evidence of substancial trade routes. T'was a ceremonial or decorative item rather than practical, not due to the negative...

    Pine resin/pitch uses

I collected a load a while back and up until now haven't really had a use for it. I just love the smell. I think i'll just keep it untill I need a bit of glue.
