I found a piece of what looked like Hazel at the weekend (on a military training area) that had been partially burnt by some previous military group.

It ended up in my wood pile for the fire.

After sawing it down I thought that is too good for the fire.

Took a couple of hours to carve but I like it.

Wow, that's a lovely bit of wood for a spoon! What a lucky find! And good carving skills!

I know what you mean George it was really nice to carve and looks decent, different to the usual Birch stuff I do.

It was made from the same tree as the chopping block. am now the owner of two sections of trunk a load of large limbs and a small selection of smaller limbs.

Here is on I started yesterday and finished about half an hour ago

was asked by a friend to make them a spoon, this is the result :)

A quick question, what would be the best wood for a spoon that is going to be used very regularly? a friend is going to catering college and wants a spoon making for use on the course.

Cheers

Best wood for use? I think anything reasonably solid will serve well. Perhaps something tough will survive a few knocks, but my main user is from ivy, which isn't a really hard wood, but it works well for me.

I left mine in a plastic bag for slightly too long and now it's blue:confused: Can I sand it away? Or is it like blue cheese?:)
