@DaveBromley - yep Yew is poisonous, but i only use it for decorative pieces, never for stuff im actually going to use for food or drink.
@Woodcutter - i tend to use Tung oil for most of my things, i lurve the smell of it or raw linseed oil, if the piece is going to be high hand use, ie a touchy feely bit of carving, then i'll use a watered down varnish for protection.

Very nice that, nice clean lines. I am amazed it didnt split with the center grain right near the top. Bloody good work that.
Once seasoned i would be using it for a tipple.
