Rust on an old axe head /

Whats the b est way of getting rid of small spots of rust on an old axe head, Autosol ?

I have cleaned some old uses up in the past using an old wirebrush and emery cloth, then given a wipe of oil as uses they did not need to be too polished

If they are small rust spots then wire wool soaked in WD40 will shift them. Hope this helps.

What would you use to give it a nice shine and polish ?

very fine wire wool or fine wet and dry paper
then use some rubbing compound or autosol type on a leather strop can be used to polish

Best way to think of WD40 is as a cleaning agent. After i use wWD40 to clean anything i will wipe it dry and oil it afterwards, 3in1 or duck/gun oil.
WD40 also attracts all sorts of dust and rubbish.

To remove rust i find varying grades of wet and dry paper is best with a bit of thin oil. Good wet and dry paper is used for metal so buy some half decent stuff and it will work twice as fast and last twice as long.

I saw someone mention that there is a lube oil that is intended to coat and not attract dust; bicycle chain oil. Never bothered with it on my axes, but perhaps I should try it...

I used to use a wax type oil on my R6 chain,, back in the days when i had cash for toys

May be a good idea that ill have to track some down..
