Came across these handy pieces of kit when looking for some new rope. I don't normally associate plastic kit with bushcraft but nonetheless see a number of uses for them.

Oh, and I have no financial interest in either the company making or selling them.

Cheers

Manufacture in khaki and apply Wooldlore logo and RM website could sell for double the price and without a 10 year waiting list! :lmao:

Great bit of kit for infinite adjustment/tension of a hammock??;)

***?

A) You can't splice kernmantel rope / cord.

B) A bowline is a very simple knot, and probably takes up less space than one of those things.

C) Why?

A) Yes you can.

B) I agree, but its still clumsy as H. As are these, in comparison to a splicing.

C) Why splice, or why these gadgets? Splicing because it works, because its good, becuse its seamless. These gadgets because.......They are easy? Dunno.

I splice. Unless my life depends upon it.

kernmantel rope can be spliced, i have some yale xtc climbing rope with a spliced eye. personaly i would never trust one of those
there is nothing wrong with useing a bowline and the only reson i got a spliced eye is because my parents were buying the rope for me:D

Neat idea for a lubber that doesn't know a rope from a line.

I can see the point in a modern age where kids cannot even tie their shoe laces. Sure it's not likely to appeal to anyone that knows the ropes but at least it's fool proof.

Let's just hope it's damned fool proof.....

I've never seen an example of a spliced kernmantle rope. I've seen hawser laid rope spliced many times ( A rigger on a job I was on ten years ago spliced a steel rope in fifteen minutes, which he then used to lift a section of modular dragline weighing many tons ), but if anyone can show me a way of splicing kernmantel rope that's not just for show then I'll be very impressed indeed.

Cheers, Michael.

There's a good guide here: http://www.neropes.com/SPL_Kernmantle_HeavyDuty.aspx

Hahaha! The US Army Natick center spent three years testing these devices... How much testing is needed for a tank?:lmao:

They were originally scheduled to spend 9 years, but then someone showed them how to open the packet which reduced the testing time to 6 years.

A further 3 years were saved when someone explained how to read the instructions.

The actual 2 years, 364 days spent testing involved looking at the instructions, looking at the component, shaking and scratching of the head.

Luckily, someone showed them how to use it on the last test day!

Why do I hear Alec Guinness' voice saying avoid the dark side....

This product is not in anyway, shape, or form, a Bushcraft product. It is actually anti-bushcraft. It is a product designed to replace knowledge.

Really trying to work out a use for it as well, and I like a loop on end of ropes.

Nice website, rope porn(The Scouts really damaged me), no hemp, want a UK supplier of 4, 6, and 8mm hemp rope. Might end up making my own at this rate, not another job for the list!

Neat idea :D , but what a price
I think I'll just keep splicing.

cheers,
Toddy

Me too!

Buy that or another knife, no contest.

Knots are free :-)

Knots/splicing are Bushcraft.

A) You can't splice kernmantel rope / cord.

I am trying to work out why you would want to?

I do not use this sort of rope.

I go out of my way to pick up three strand for nearly everything.

The only non three strand I have is Climbing rope, or Paracord, and would not want that spliced anyway.

B) A bowline is a very simple knot, and probably takes up less space than one of those things.

Double Figure of Eight is what I use in that sort of rope. A bowline is a temp knot, you have to work a eight undone.

With you there....

At the risk of turning this thread into a "what qualifies as a bushcraft tool" let me just say that I doubt a Leica M8 is one either but sure nice to have one in your kit bag. Oh, and then there is the little matter of a very fine forum given over to the use of such devises and clearly "designed to replace" the art of cave painting!

Cheers

QUOTE]

Try cosalt-Lewis, they had manila hemp last time I was in. Had an interesting discussion with the salesman too, he says there's a rash of really good quallity sisal rope that is being sold as manila hemp but it's not the real stuff. Caveat emptor. It doesn't last anywhere near as well and they will give no guarantees as to breaking strength or stretch with the fake stuff. If all it's needed for is practicing knots though......

cheers,
Toddy
