see what you mean stu, you should have got the longer length ones as these need a good stroke from something which doesnt dig in so much. its the stuff the americans call metal match as you can scrape it off in curls like magnesium then strike into it. more a survival bit of kit than a full time sparker for trangias.
Quick tip:
If you're not getting sparks from a firesteel when using the back of your knife then you can create a small edge on the spine of the knife blade by running a file over the top of the spine in one direction, it just creates a little barb that works wonders for getting good sparks out.
P.S might not want to do this if you have a really exspensive knife but I was quite happy to do it with my clipper for the results it gives!
