Why does my house squeal like a tribe of banshee warriors everytime we turn the shower on ?

We`ve got a 13 year old combi boiler with dodgy water and pressure meters if that makes any difference. We`re just saving for a new one at the moment.

Nothings made to last now .think about it, why make things to last forever,you'll never make money, 10 years is about the norm,before you have to replace it, so you've not done bad with the boiler.

I've got a very similar problem, and i've managed to trace it to a shut off valve (the type you give a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver). Although it is a 15mm valve, the hole through the ballvalve is only about 1/4" and this causes cavitation (big word for the day).

Check if you have a similar valve to isolate your shower, and if you can pipe direct.

I have a shrieking shower as well, we worked it out to be the diaphagm in the mixer control on the wall and found you can play with the mixer and change the sound. I haven't played a tune yet but am getting there.

It sounds like a bad washer in the tap causing a sound wave in the water which resonates. It could be a very cheap fix.

Hi Spamel...So why should we be using a GAS FITTER to instal a shower/bathroom?

CORGI is the Confederation Of Registered Gas Installers perhaps a plumber who has been personally recommended is the best for the job

I have just done my CORGI exams and we never saw a shower.

I am also a plumbing and heating engineer with 30 years behind me, and hopefully a few more left in front

Right, if it is making a lot noise has it been doing this since it was fitted?

Is it running from a Combi boiler or from a hot water cylinder fed from a cistern in the roof? oops, just saw it is on a combi

Perhaps the "ballofix" or similar isolation valve is partially open, as this is sometimes done to restrict flow, though the pressure stays the same, so opening it may improve a flow to it but little else, is there a couple of filters on the shower inlets? they may be blocking up with lime-scale and need cleaning out, it maybe that the valve needs a service, as with a lot of mechanical items it does need to have a overhaul now and then.

Have you any info on the type of shower? If it is on a Combi boiler was it set to high pressure or left on low pressure setting?
