The Alder Leaf Beetle will feed on Hazel as well as Alder. It's about 6 to 7mm long, black but shines kind of metallic blue. We have them every year on the Alder but I've not had a problem with them on Hazel. Have Alder trees lost their leaves early in the drought which may force them onto the Hazel?
Not been an issue with us but the alder mostly didn't drop its leaves and perhaps because there was a big wasps nest by the stream. I think the wasps kept the willow beetle at bay too (wasps love stands of willow for some reason).
