found this just now, a family of beavers in the river otter!

didn't realise they had released them yet in scotland either

beavers boar amd wallabies all released illegally, expect to see eurasian bison by you soon!

Hmm , The River Otter is less than 10 miles away from me - I'll have to keep my ears and eyes out.

Most likely from this place which has a water course feeding into the River Otter http://www.escot-devon.co.uk/beavers

Couple of years ago a few Wild Boar also escaped from the same place whilst in transit.

No photos - but sat down near the River and watched Three Beavers doing what ever they were doing.

Interesting creatures the Beaver. As numbers increase their effects on the environment is going to be interesting. I just read that they were pretty common in GB until the 17th century, which was surprising to me as I’d imagined that they’d been driven to extinction here long before for then.

I can't think of anything that does it in the same manner ??? Maybe insects or some fishy/crustacean type thingymyjig does a semi close approximation.

But Beavers are full on intentional engineering.

I can't really think of any other animals which intentionally do it. At least not a more permanent or long-term basis.

Although maybe you could you include nest building animals within your definition of "actively changes its environment in a lasting manner to its own purpose"

I t'was up quite early this morning - got into position looking upstream at the dam on a conveniently placed foot bridge - zero'd in on looking for movement in the early hours.

Unfortunately... the enemy Beaver were already to my rear downstream and managed to glide underneath me from behind - by the time I spotted them they were climbing up their Dam to make their dawn retreat to the Lodge.

Still... Fun to be within 5ft of the beasties , even If I was caught unaware.

Great to see and a nice feeling to know these recent reintroductions are establishing themselves once more.
