Phew, that's harsh. We're getting mid 30's in West Sussex and that's more than hot enough.

I've been out and cut a couple of long hazel poles, tied them in a big arch in the garden, and added a 10 nozzle irrigation misting system. Lovely cooling mist blowing about. Genius

Buy a roll of this stuff and tape it to the OUTSIDE of any windows facing the sun. It is very effective and relatively cheap. Do not be tempted to tape it to the inside, although it may be easier, or you risk cracking your window pane. This method is especially good on Velux style windows.

Yeh, but at around £80 a window (small one) I think I'll stick to my 'string and sticky tape' solution

Just checked the temp of the water in my foot deep wildlife pond..35° at 1.20pm.
30° in the shade next to the house, 37° at the top of the garden in shade under the apple tree.
My phone says its only 31° outside.
Either I've got 3 different wrong thermometers, or someone is telling porkies!
The street is so quiet , nothing moving,, not even the bees or birds.
My little tame sparrows , are usually flying up to me within a few seconds of me going outside, not a sign of them.
I have water in shallow trays all about the garden for wildlife, but its evaporated within an hour, or too hot for the wildlife to drink, even if it's shaded.
This is getting silly.
Checked on an elderly friend yesterday evening about 7pm, they had a bad headache and hadn't drunk all day, skin dry, not sweating, didn't want a drink, just wanted to sleep... electrolyte mixture made up, got them to sip it slowly. ambulance called. Waited untill they arrived, (1.30hrs) diagnosis, severe dehydration. Off for an I V, rehydration at the hospital.
Thank heavens I called by!
Don't forget to check on your elderly neighbours folks. Know the signs!

Your phone is probably getting that 31°C from an observation station... It could be the Met Office, a home monitor affiliated with Weather Underground, or some other network.

It could even be a "virtual observation" made by interpolating from several real observations.

Dehydrated Neighbor is coming home this evening.. he just rang me to say thanks. I'm very happy. Glad to be of service.
Suffering a bit myself today. Hands swollen and painful. Apparently extreme heat can trigger auto immune responses. I do have a bit of arthritis in my hands. Seems to have been triggered by the heat.
Blow this for a game of soldiers!
It's not funny now.
The youngsters are fine but some of us oldies are struggling somewhat.
