So I went to the Bushcraft Show with the family. First time in 10 years, as last went before children...now I am not to sure what I was expecting, but I found the children side of courses and things to do rather lacking mostly.
So I thought I would review:
Bushcraft kids - fire lighting
Now bushcraft kids is pitched quite well, the children got to try a number of techniques and allowed to get on with it. There was a few staff members, but really it was just one person doing everything, thus some children and parents were waiting or the parents were doing everything for the children.
Overall is was fun for the children and as mine had experience with fire lighting they got more out of it than others 6/10
Camp wilderness - bee talk / paracord bracelet/ buddy up bow drill
More free activities, but the whole thing was lead by young adults / teenagers. I would not have trusted them with the safety of my children...which is a concern as the product they were selling was 3 and 5 day Children's camps.
So the bee talk, the instructor had zero knowledge, giving the wrong information and completely out smarted by my 7 and 9 year girls... Whom corrected her and had to explain thermo regulation (bumblebees) and bioaccumulation in relation to pesticides and the foodweb....I am so proud of them
1/10 she tried (found out afterwards she was the team leader of the event...thus not a 2/10)
Paracord bracelets were good, but few staff and people were left waiting, whom needed help. For us this was good fun 8/10
Bow drill, the demonstration was embarrassing, the staff tried briefly, with 6 attempts to get the drill to not ping off, and didn't even get an ember....just gave up straight away.
my 7 year old did this in 2 minutes to get an ember and fire, and both my children did this a further 2 times to get embers. All blown to flame...sort of, as using relatively green lawn mower cut grass.
Two families came over to us to learn and get instruction, as the staff were incompetent. Fun task, but rating on other family experience 3/10
Rika ACE CIC - lantern and woodland walk and story
Now this was a disappointment, lantern were collecting and sticking on flowers and leaves to a glass jar...okay, I get it. In the evening was the woodland walk....eer no it wasn't, there was this strange walk over to a pasture and the instructor went off and just sat down away from everyone while the children were left to find some things based upon a print out.
I went over to her and asked what she was doing and when was the woodland walk to start...she was not interested and said she was going to read a story at the tree house, and if I wanted I could go and walk in the woods now or later. Convince her to at least ask what people wanted...of course children like tree houses...so no woodland walk. Story was rubbish and that's it...off as fast as she could go.
A number of parents and children were confused and were asking when was the woodland walk to happen? 0/10 waste of money and didn't give a **** about the people
We went for our walk in the woods, as didn't want to disappoint my girls.
So childrens Bushcraft offers are a bit shocking. I have not listed everything, but to get the idea.
