Spring anyone ?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Spring is well under way, here; has been for a few weeks.

Horse chestnut trees have finished the sticky bud stage and the leaves are unfolding.

The sycomore and field maples have young leaves, various prunus varieties are in full bloom.

Buds are still small on the grapevines.

Grape hyacinths have been out for a while and should be getting to the end of their flowering; tulips, daffodils and narcissi are either flowering or in bud depending on the amount of sun that they get.

In the wooded areas there have been snowdrops out for a few weeks, dead-nettle and celandine likewise. Cyclamen, not quite yet.

Yesterday was back to winter, 4 ° ,even snow localy.
This morning sunny and back to average temps.
Gooseberry bushes are beginning to leaf , as are the elders,
Tulips are now showing nicely and will be in flower soon.
Almost time to hunt out t shirts and sandals, and put the thermals and woolies away. Yay!

Pear trees in blossom. A little too early as we still have night frosts.

Beautiful blossom but not good around here. There are very few pollinators about my house. Hope that changes in the next few days while plants are fertile.

This afternoon, I had to rush inside from attempting to sort out the clematis, due to a sudden crazy hail storm.
Went from warm sunshine to hail in about two minutes. I just managed the last cut as it came down.
Its gone very very chilly this evening.

Our lake shows some signs of shedding the ice cover but I can still see 4 km of unbroken cover in the other direction. Also some bird cherries seem to be alive 2 mm of green in the leaf buds showing. Very very few migrating birds have made the decision to cross the Baltic so far. Extremely little snow and ground is very dry water levels in most lakes are below average too. We'll see ...

Quince is in flower too.

I don't have lilac but my quince have thewir leaves and flower buds.

It does feel like it's been a cold and slow spring this year, although daffs were roughly on usual schedule, the leaves are slow coming on the trees.
