Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
With the few people I have known to be somewhere on autism spectrum I have felt them to be "strange" but so far never threatening in any way.

On that note, there's the most handsome, black, long haired retriever type dog that frequents a local Tesco. I'd love to say hello but can only exchange the odd flirty look as it's a guide dog and is really working. (Actually the staff walk round with the owner as well so the guide dog can spare the odd friendly smile).

A Flatcoat? I wasn't aware they used them for guide dogs; the ones I know are quite 'bouncy' :) Lovely dogs though.

Definitely not your usual lab, not sure if it's a flatcoat, a cross or something I'm not aware of.

I've not been able to ask, there's certainly a glint in it's eye that might suggest a more lively dog.

When my sons were little we were puppy walkers for Guide Dogs for the Blind. The last puppy was a cross between a labrador and a curly coat retriever. Every single hair that Donna shed was sort of like this, and this size

and they floated in the air. They were in everything. Drove me nuts, especially in my kitchen. I lost a stone and a half rearing her. Maybe the long haired ones are easier to deal with ?

Hah ! we had a collie/KC spaniel cross when I was little.....yeah, all the endless energy and intense focus of a collie with the utter mindless joy and enthusiasm of the spaniel.....we called that dog Lucky. Bonnie dog, absolutely no harm in him, just manic full on DOG, but ye gods the calm when my big brother gave him to a friend who had a farm in the Borders :)

Leigh is a good down to earth chap. No flum flam or hype, like some others. Spoken to him many times on the phone, and got both bushcraft items and some "prepping supplies" ie a berkfield water filter, food grade buckets, and some other bits and bobs.
Always excellent advice, and extremely prompt service.
Shop is absolutely worth a visit if you are around Builth.

Its interesting to see and think why the BBC may run , on a fairly regular basis , a piece of the prepping community - It 'feels' like the war sabre rattling of concerns of Ukraine / Russia spilling out has now is quieter than before ? ( Just me?? ) and the government have backed down from pushing the citizens to prepare rhetoric.

So why do the BBC keep running pieces on Prepping ? We all know it exists ? I don't see it as new News to anyone?

Odd.

Softening up, initial messaging to reduce the hammer blow if fuel rationing is required in a few weeks time.

There's a You Tube channel which is of a tone i would describe as "mild prepper" and which I strongly suspect is a govt psy-ops channel. They reiterate the govt guidance on resiliance in lots of different ways, and the vibe is the same there.

If only a small proportion of folks get into the back of their head that it's a good idea to have a bit more food in the cupboard, a power bank to power their phone for a few hours and keep their car fuel tank 3/4 full not empty, then the impact of fuel challenges are softened. If you take the proportion of society who follow the govt guidance on resilience from (say) 10% to 30% it's a big saving on demands on the authorities if something goes pear-shaped.

I have reason to believe that a period when fuel is expensive and there are regional shortages in UK is imminent/has started. Not only some knowledgable commentators on msm saying it now, but the International Energy Authority is encouraging fuel saving measures such as working from home or using public transport, already Sri Lanka is on a 4-day week and some Asian countries are introducing measures such as min air con temp of 26 C and recommending short-sleeved shirts rather than suits in the office.

People are believing that too. I had to travel to the East Midlands for a client meeting last week (they insisted), took my car as it gets 70mpg on diesel. The Midlands m-ways were the quietest I have seen them in ages, fewer cars and trucks about. Had that vibe that was there in the weeks leading up to the COVID lockdown.

I think that it’s seen as rather odd by quite a lot of people, and people or activities deemed as a bit strange are often quite interesting to people.

Whilst to people on this forum it’s probably fairly familiar and we likely acknowledge there is a huge spectrum of what constitutes ‘prepping’, to a lot of TV watchers it’s rather an exotic and fascinating window to look through.

Plus, of course, the media is completely addicted to pushing doomsday narratives.

I agree that its seen as Odd and it probably is Odd, I have aired my opinion before I feel its a bit of a mental illness or something maybe just on a spectrum like autism / adhd but in relationship to pessimism / optimism ??
Apocalypse based films & TV series are a regular outpouring of media and Hollywood and so I don't feel prepping/preppers is anything new to the general population at large , but they seem keen to cover it on a semi regular basis .

Good for the guy that owns the shop if he wants free publicity , I just find covering the same story from the BBC a bit leftfield. Or agenda driven - whatever that is.

I took a walk through Attingham Park with a daughter two days ago. It’s a lovely NT estate quite heavily wooded in places and close to the conurbations of Telford and Shrewsbury.

The car park was pretty crowded on this sunny day.

Conversation turned To Preppers. We thought that if the apocalypse happened the pathways would be clogged by 4x4’s and it might be difficult to find a wooded space for your hammock and tarp plus your pile of dried food as folk found themselves camo shoulder to camo shoulder along the Severn.

The thought amused but I do wonder just how much this sort of response has been thought through. There are a number of apocalyptic zones in the world right now. It makes me proud of the innocents that are suffering most in the absence of central support and who are organising, cooperating and sharing in order to survive.

But as a counter point to that - that is the more extreme end of prepping isn't it?
Normal conventional life , walks in the park , Netflix and chill, Deliveroo = White
WROL , End times , global cataclysm type event , < No free WiFi > = Black

There are lots of drop off point of incremental grey tones between those two states of being where being somewhat 'prepped' and self resilient can make the whole experience somewhat easier and lend assurance for yourself and family.

There is alot of scenarios going on around the world , but also I think we in a very forward leading western world with plenty of mod cons , utilities ( safe potable water / gas / electricity ) , community provided services ( Fire brigade / Hospital / Ambulance service ) do find it even more of a shock to our existence because in the event of a snow storm , lengthy black out , closure of Greggs 24 hour opening service find we need to quickly moderate our expectations.
