Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
We left that behind well over a decade ago. For us it was a fairly logical decision as it was fairly obvious we could spend most of our earnings simply to enable us to carry on working. We can now live comfortably on quite a small income. The main problem we are going to face is having enough money to pay council tax for services we will not be provided and to pay for even basic health care.
Indeed. We in rural Lincolnshire appear to pay taxes to pay for the Metropolitan police (which costs double oer capita compared to ours) & public transport for cities

My Scoutmaster ( RIP ) was a brilliant man , something I probably only appreciate more now than then.. He would leave the planning of any camping activities to the Scouts themselves - we would have to present a list of things we needed to draw from the store and actively think ahead and plan what we would need. Food , Water , Shelter , Cooking equipment. A check list for each scout to bring with them from home.

A great mental exercise for young minds in accountability and self reliant action / thinking .
That is actually how Scouts was surposed to run. The Liberals got to them in the 60/70s and turned them into a young club.

I think there is something odd with this question in that prepping seems to have become survival from the 80s.

Be prepared is bushcraft thinking in that you go out into the world with knowledge and the items that can help you use that knowledge. A lot of it is to carry items that solve lots of problems which you maybe be able to fix with time however they make life easier. A big thing for me is the amount of people who get headaches and do not carry tablets.

Prepping is about moving your time increasing your survival comfort zone. The best example of this I have heard is someone who lost their job and did not need to buy food for a year while sorting out a new job.
Survival prepping is trying to survive the complete breakdown of cilivasation which I lost interest in when I saw the nuke map of the UK.

Someone, somewhere is preaching new things on that score. The number of times I've heard "nuclear weapons are smaller and cleaner now, all we have to do is go into our basements for a fortnight and we'll be okay. It's worth it to get rid of a dictator like Putin" in the past couple of years is frankly scary. Often coming from people who should know better.

The only regular bus here is the school bus. Public transport into the nearest town means walking miles to a main road
I'm in a well populated city suburb and unless I travel in rush hour, I can either wait an hour between services or walk to the nearest "metro route" which is half the distance to the city centre anyway.

We would have to walk miles to get a poorly run bus, but I expect that in the country. What I'm referring to is the services you would expect and feel you're directly paying for are being severely cut or withdrawn in some places whilst the taxes to pay for them are being increased. Our recycling for example, which is virtually all our rubbish, is no longer collected. Roads are just not maintained, I had to help a motorcyclist the other night as he came off his bike due to the appalling road.

So, whilst to some degree we can leave the rat race, we will need to find ever increasing money to pay the taxes and extra money to pay for services that aren't being delivered.

G5 solar storm hitting earth today. See yt Stephan Burns for details. Could cause radio black outs, GPS malfunction and affect the internet and the grid.
Depends where it hits if it will affect uk. Havnt got time to deep dive this morning.
Hope it's not going to be another Carrington event.!

Same here. Two miles walk minimum in any direction to a main ‘B’ road, and one bus route with an unreliable timetable. You can flag buses down, and there’s currently a maximum council-set fare, but as the buses are pretty few and far between, we’ve never used them. Ironically the local press carries stories that the bus routes will close if they aren’t used…..One of the prices for living in a beautiful area I guess.

Too cloudy here, also being in a valley that is east west orientated, no northern horizon to speak of,just a steep high wooded hill , little chance here. But if I had a car and could get out on the tops, with a clear sky, I'm sure it would be fantastic.
Hope some of you are lucky enough to see it. Let's see some pics if you are.

Well, there are smaller (tactical) nukes and larger (strategic). But I don´t think the strategic ones are any cleaner.

When Chernobyl happened sheep in Wales were radioactive so not sure I want to try any of them.

Just had two mahoosive military planes fly over my home, probably less than a hundred feet up. This has never happened before like that. We sometimes get the odd nimrod or helicopters fly over fairly low, but this was incrediblely low.
Such a roar, and the house trembled and rattled. Chandelier started swinging, (it's only a small one mind) I thought it was an earthquake, and ran out of the house in sock clad feet..no shoes, just in case. My gosh it gave me a turn and a half!
The planes were massive, no idea what they were apart from obviously being military ones.
Things are definatly ramping up. They were flying west to east. Definitely "under the radar" American bombers sneaking into the UK perhaps? I know the shape of most British military planes. These are new to me.
Sadly I was in a bit of a tizz, thinking it was an earthquake, (it realy felt like a big one),so didn't get a clear view.
So, I'll make a cuppa, keep calm and carry on.
Phew!

Just checked out a couple of yt vids on the B1. Definatly what I saw and heard.
Awesome bird!
Makes everything rattle and roll at close quarters!
But why so blooming low?!!!!!
It's not like they were anywhere near landing here.
