WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
And then you can use them to build another shed, for more tools!
Just having all my tools in one place instead of some in the loft, some under the stairs, some in the lobby etc will be a novelty. As stated previously, no room for another shed unfortunately but I'll work with what I now have.

Last night I made a fire.
One match, one fire.

I put a fair sized piece of oak (about 30cm diameter and 20cm long) to one side; it was still smouldering away with a few small flames this morning. Embers from that were enough to get another fire going this morning.

And now all the lads will want you to make them one.

Or (Hopefully) show them how

I’m in the same position. Whilst more storage would be wonderful, the alternative is just not having a garden. Just amazed at how quickly my shed filled up.

A prototype sleeve for a Moleskine notebook.
I was inspired by something I saw on Reddit and thought it would be quite a simple project to turn around.
I'm planning to make the final thing in Cordura, but I'm glad I tested it in cotton first.
I got one of the seams backwards and had to unpick it, and I want to add a pen loop.
Fun way to spend a couple of hours though.

Problem with more sheds and storage space is that the number of tool expands so as to fill the space available for their storage.

Half a dozen bush candle fire lighters.
It looks as if next weekend will be wet!!!

“Traditionally” they are made by melting the wax in a tea light and pushing a coil of corrugated cardboard into the wax as an oversized wick.

However they require a match or a lighter to get them going.

I use a short piece of toilet roll inner leaving a space in the centre. When The wax is just starting to set I put a piece of cotton wool into it. I can light this with a ferro.

Don’t put the cotton wool in too soon or it will soak up liquid wax which then hardens and you are back to needing a match.

Packed for storage.
And
Open for lighting.

You might see one or two in use next weekend :)

I’ve seen these all over the place online, but almost all made of plastic. I’d thought about making a couple for my family & friends, but one of the ladies at our craft group is an avid reader, and not very well right now, so this prototype is for her. I made it out of a scrap of hickory as that is light (11 grammes) and tough. Sanded to 600 grit, and no finish other than what our fingers place there.

Also seen these and thought the same.

I may try making mine from a Peanut and Lemoncurd sandwich in case reading makes my lips tired.

Nice work - going to see if I can do the same. Did you just eyeball the arc? for curvature fitting page ? not sure if I'll make it too aggressive or not.

Nice idea but my arthritic thumbs will never take it. I find I need straps for a Kindle for the same reason. I find I tend to hold a book with my fingers over the top.

Odd as it may seem, I opened a book, standing it on end on a piece of card and then traced the shape of the opened pages with a pencil :). I eyeballed the thumb hole on the centre line to ensure enough material around it, and Bob’s-yer-wotsit. The only thing I’m wondering about now is the size of the thumb hole. I made it 25mm and that seems to suit me, but most ladies have smaller hands IME.

That's what I'm using, but they must be unglazed terracotta.
The only frost proof ones I've found, put the cost at £90, and then you need the sand on top.
The ones I'm using atm as an experiment are from The Range, are not realy big enough, but total cost minus sand is under a tenner. Won't last more than the summer, but presently it’s all I have to work with .
I’ve been thinking of trying one of these out. I think the inner one can/should be glazed? Helps to stop the liquid going into the food. Was considering that an old saucepan with a lid for the inner container would work. Be interesting to know how your experiment goes.

For my new telescope, I machined a collimating cap out of aluminium, and some new bearings out of Delrin for the altitude movement on the Dobsonian base. I wasn't sure if the new bearings would make a difference but they absolutely do make a noticeable difference.
