Hi, Not sure if I'm speaking to a staff member here but I'm trying to. As I'm new I'm trying to find out how the posting and direct messaging works. Yesterday I replied to an old post (February 2025) ....... how does the member who made the original post become aware that there is a new reply? Not sure if I'm allowed to direct message them to make them aware of my reply (if it will) or do I just have to sit back and wait for them to come online again? I'm thinking it's just a case of keeping an eye on things. Can somebody please explain. Many thanks.

The easiest way, assuming they are still on the forum, is to reply to their post by pressing the reply text at the bottom of the post, that will result in them getting an alert (the little bell at the top right). That's what I have done here.

If you just add a post without replying (or quoting) they will only get a notification if they have selected to be notified when threads they are interested in are added to.

(At least, that's my interpretation of what seems to happen :))

Thanks Broch, it was a reply I posted and have since noticed the old post/thread had moved up the list of recent posts. It looks as though the member concerned hasn't been online since early September so I'm guessing I just have to wait until his next visit, but thanks for your help - appreciated.

@starrynight I think that you can tag members in your posts also.

Yes you can @starrynight :)

Welcome to the forum by the way :finger:

Looked at your post to Jungle Jim and you've replied to him, so if he's still about he'll see a red 1 by the notifications bell symbol at the top of screen, just as you will having been tagged twice in this thread.

...but you are right, unless he has turned on email notifications, you will have to wait till he is back on the forum for him to see the new post notification.
