Evening all,

Looking through my wardrobe I have a jacket shaped hole.

I have a lightweight Jack Wolfskin jacket (feels like cotton rather than plastic) and a paramo rainproof that are great for the odd summer shower and I have a Keela Munro and Keela Falkland ventile that are great for full winter.

Today was an absolute downpour, but still warm and walking to the station this morning in the Munro I was sweating hard.

The best waterproof I used previously was the soldier 95 goretex, light and pure goretex. Never got wet in this but it’s DPM and I don’t want that anymore.

Is there a similar jacket out there? I don’t want a liner, don’t want numerous pockets, no gizmos just a pure waterproof in blue/black/grey/brown

Thank you

That looks good
Did you get one in the end? Not that we’ve had much rain for a solid testing but I wondered what you thought of it.

The Struther is still hanging on the coat rack, I’m not sure that navy blue and a white Jack Russell were a well thought out choice :rolleyes2:

A Keela Orkney waxed jacket arrived, and it’s fantastic, just like my old Barbour inherited as a cast off from my dad years ago when his shooting days were over.

Still in my basket, as ever other things seem to take priority.

I’m going to have a dig out at the weekend to thin out some of the jackets I have.

Well, one of the reasons I mentioned the unused Hoggs Struther was I’m not sure how much use I’m going to get out of it. It’s XL, which is a size up from my usual L and it’s a great fit, so if you’re in the market, I got it at a great price. Put it this way, I could use it, but I’m not going to miss it.

An old thread, but I'm looking for advice on a good waterproof set (jacket/trousers), for when I'm out doing a weekend hike.
I have an Austrian army surplus Goretex jacket for gentle and static activities. It is very waterproof. I have a Paramo Velez adventure light smock for more strenuous activities. It is very breathable and comfortable.

I have a pair of British army surplus MVP/Goretex over trousers in camo. They are excellent.

I’ve just had my 20+ year old Arcteryx Alpha SV reproofed & seam taped. It’s a great coat & shows almost no signs of wear. Downside is it cost a small fortune back in the day! I think there’s a Arcteryx Beta SV in the sales section here at a very tempting price. Worth a look.

I'm not sure how much you want to spend but I think Keela offer great value for money. I don't actually own a Keela garment myself, although I bought my son a Keela jacket, and the quality is fantastic, but I have seen plenty of them in person, and spoke to people who use them, as we are issued Keela Munro jacket & salopettes in search and rescue dogs association (I'm currently waiting on my set and can't wait to try them, especially the salopettes).

My other recommendation, and something that I have used quite a lot now, is Paramo. I have become slightly hesitant to recommend Paramo because, whilest there are disgruntled users of all types of outdoor garments, Paramo definitely attracts the most controversy, and it's an easy target because 'it's not technically waterproof', however I have used both my Velez jacket and Velez smock in up to around 6 hours of continuous rain and remained as dry as could be expected in any waterproof jacket in persistent rain, that includes being static whilst dogsbodying, walking across the Brecon Beacons, and more recently, during training exercises with a mountain rescue team.

Don't forget, Vinted is often full of bargains.

As mentioned in another thread, I’ve been very happy with my Hoggs of Fife Field Pro jackets. Their fit suits my body shape well - average height but stout and broad shouldered, and their prices were quite reasonable at places such as New Forest Clothing. I was out all day in heavy winds, rain and cold while beating during the week, and my Struther Smock field jacket kept me dry and comfy while doing a fair bit of exercise. For easier going outdoor wet days my Kincaid field jacket has been great.

I’ve no connection with the company other than being a satisfied customer.

My preference is something light and breathable with big pockets. In one of the pockets I'll stuff a lightweight poncho. If it's just drizzling then I don't bother with the poncho but it it's honking it down then I know that with the poncho on top I'll always be perfectly dry. The condensation on the inside of the non-breathable poncho isn't an issue. Never been a great fan of waterproof trousers because they tend to get badly damaged in the often very brambly areas I get into but I have Realtree jacket and trousers which have been very good - especially under the poncho - with more forgiving vegetation.

I wear Paramo analogy. For me it breathes better than membranes and keeps me comfortable. I have a Velez Adventure Smock for lighter use. I tend to wear a base layer under it. I might get damp sometimes but I am comfortable. I also have an old Aspira Smock which is bomb proof. Heavier but good if it is cold. I wore it in Norway skiing in -12 with a thick base layer whilst moving. I don't mind being slightly damp but comfortable and warm. I sometimes don't notice I am damp until I stop. When I stop I remove the Paramo and tend to put a top which really wicks (polartec alpha) on top of the base layer and my Paramo on top. This drys out any dampness.I like the old Buffalo clothing principle with clothing. I aim to be comfortable not necessarily dry all the time.
