I know there was previously one which was discontinued due to lack of interest, but with the risk becoming higher pretty much everywhere, there is some encouraging news: https://www.ourspectrumadventures.com/lyme-disease-vaccine-may-soon-be-available-in-the-uk/

Phase 3 trials currently ongoing, with the hope for FDA approval next year and then hopefully UK approval shortly afterwards.

If the trials show it to be safe, I’d be keen. Those little biting buggers are a real menace.

I am not finding long trousers and sleeves effective these days, for some reason. The little nymphs (so thankfully not a real risk) are somehow finding their way in groups up - had eight wandering my forearm last weekend. Sock tucking only lasts so long, and gaiters are nasty in this heat. Giving the non-scented Smidge stuff a go.

Someone in another thread recommended this permethrin based spray: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lifesystems-Anti-Mosquito-Clothing-Treatment/dp/B08K8KXVGY

A good dose of that on your boots/trousers/sleeves should kill the ticks before they get to your skin, if that helps you.

Same here, I’d probably go for it. I spend a lot of time hiking and camping, and I’ve had to pull a couple of ticks off myself over the years, once even found one after a weekend trip and had that “oh great…” moment. I know people who’ve had Lyme and it really messed them up, so if this vaccine ends up being safe and effective, I’d feel a lot better having that extra bit of protection.

Ah, bummer. I wasn’t aware of that, so thanks for the info.
Have treated clothes with it for years. The neighbours cat treats my house as his personal social club. No application when cat is around. Spray against other clothing and a big sheet of cardboard that is put out of the way between whiles, and clothes are dried up out of the way.

Saw this today. Tring is just about 10 miles away from me. Ironically, on Thursday I was chatting to a colleague at work who got a tick bit and got initial Lyme symptoms just a week or so ago! He thinks the tick travelled back with him from Canada, but I am not so sure.

Thank you for the suggestion on this, the problem is its toxicity to cats which makes it a no go unfortunately. I appreciate the recommendation though Chris.
It’s generally only toxic to cats if the dosage is very high - typically it’s the permethrin used in dog treatments that causes issues to cats. The Life Systems spray is .5% and once dried should be fine.
I have a cat and when I used Life Systems I sprayed the clothing in the garage and dried it there and then aired it in the washing line. I also kept it in my kit ‘cupboard’ and away from the cat.
I’ve been using the Bushwear wash in treatment and trying Smidge because it’s odourless.

Regarding nymphs. I had always understood that they could transmit just as well as the adults, so after reading your post I went looking for data. What I am seeing says they pose an equal or greater risk. Laval stage seem the safe ones, as yet no blood meal to become carriers.

Ah that's good to know, I'll look into it, thank you

That's really good to know, I was simply trusting what a neighbour had said and as it felt like it made sense (smaller, younger seeming less bad) that I didn't even check for myself. Much appreciated Chris.

Besides Borelia there is a TBE vaccin. TBE is also something you get from ticks.

I can’t seem to find any research or evidence online around ivermectin eliminating Lyme disease, do you have any research you could link to?

Although these are also two different things - a vaccine would be to prevent the onset of the disease in the first place via immunity rather than treating an existing illness.
