Customs seize slingshot

Hi Guys,
Just had an interesting letter from Irish (Republic) customs. Two slingshots have been seized. No real reason given for the seizure. Anyone have any experience with this?
If they came from the UK or another non EU country it is a simple matter of tax collection, new or second hand. Nothing to do with what it is. Slingshot are not restricted here. They are just crooks with their hand out. Happens all the time. x

Nope. I use the post office and get all my stuff sent to Northern Ireland for that very reason. There is duty to be paid on all goods even second hand. It is like that throughout the EU. My friend lives in Spain and left his phone in England on a recent visit. His brother posted it back and it is now being held for ransom at customs. He received a letter demanding duty for importation of goods.. The duty can be paid on goods to the UK gov before sending and then they cant take it twice. Either way someone is going to tax you.

That’s the thing. I’ve had plenty of customs payment requests. Thin is the first were it was seized under article 34. Very weird. I’m writing to them asking why it was seized and we’ll see what the response looks like.

Ok ,I looked it up and.article 34 is the authority and legal aspects of seizure. It is not the actual grounds for seizure. My money still says they want import duty. You can buy all the sling shots and accessories in the world here so there can be no issue lawfully. x
can you keep me posted please. I am interested in what unfolds. x

No, a seizure is a seizure. It’s nothing to do with fees, the items have been taken out of circulation on legal grounds. Getting them back is a pain, as a BritishBlades member found out when his UKPK was seized coming in from Spyderco in the States. A knife designed specifically to fit within UK legal carry law and named the United Kingdom Pen Knife.

Whatever the case. it is unlawful. These ****** often have no idea what they are even doing.

I disagree, this is a family forum, I think the censoring is just fine - a word like 'idiots' or similar would not have detracted at all from your statement :)

I do agree however that they have stepped outside the remit of law/import rules but the effort of getting them to change their mind is unlikely to be worthwhile in my experience.

Point taken on the censorship. I just wanted something stronger for officious pillocks. On the seizure itself I think it is worth every effort to pursue. Yes it is hard work but worthwhile to stop so called public servants from making it up as they go along. With things like this I will not rest on principle and will pursue it to the end. I think it's not just about me. It's about the next person and the next. They need to be held to account. xx

I agree with Broch, the swear filter is there for a reason. Also, it’s a matter of respect for the forum, it doesn’t look good when people come here and see ranting and abuse. It’s not Facebook or X.

None of it is going to solve the problem or change anything. I’ve lost expensive knives to HMRC, a lovely Spyderco, a Benchmade, supposedly ‘gravity knives’. I was annoyed, it felt unjust, but so what? I didn’t use someone’s forum to vent spleen. Alphaburners questions and replies have been sensible and he’s making some enquiries, you’ve gone off in a vigilante mission. :D :D :D
