That is sophisticated, all I have is an outbacker portable stove, doesn't even have a damper on the flue, but I can cook basic stuff on it.

Nothing wrong with basic woodburners, but ranges are designed to be a nain source of cooking as well as heating

You can also get the "Apple Pi" and "Pumpkin Pi" multifuel burners from Ekol, they can be specced in various combinations- with a hotplate on top, or with a little oven above the firebox......

The place we're renovating had an old solid fuel Rayburn Royale in working condition, so I've had it refurbished and it will be going back into the kitchen......

Bit of an update....

The refurb is at the point that the new place is ready to move into, so I'm spending 3 or 4 days a week here doing the stuff which makes moving easier (building units, assemsbling beds, painting, awaiting delivery of fridge etc etc etc.

It's been cold so I fire up the Rayburn when I'm here. They are very good bits of kit, the version I have doesn't have the back boiler, but they are very good for cooking and heating the place through properly.

There's something about solid fuel ranges that is difficult to replicate with other types of cooking/heating; even though we'd had the gas central heating on for a few weeks, it took a few days of the Rayburn running to get the (north-facing) new kitchen extension properly warm.

I was lucky enough to grow up with my mam lighting the coal fire every day in the winter, then later on we had a Parkray, so there wasn't too much of a learning curve. plus when I was younger and dafter, I volunteered on a heritage railway for several years, trained as a loco fireman so managing a coal fire in a closed box by the colour of the bottom of the fire bed is not a new thing for me....

A solid fuel range really makes you value fuel and warmth in a way that switching on gas or electric heating doesn't. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the convenience of modern heating as well as the next person, but I'm also glad that I put in the Rayburn and the wood stoves.

Totally. Chopping your own fuel and feeding the range is like growing & preserving food. You value it in a different way
