How difficult is it to take the course and pass the test to be a radio amateur?

I gave up all ham a couple of years ago due to all vhf and a lot of hf being full of idiots swearing all the time. Sounded just like cb. Has it improved recently ? I used to love doing sota.
There will always be idiots spoiling any hobby, be it radio bushcraft off roading kayaking and much more just don’t let them get you down and carry on

I can ignore a certain amount but in the Wigan/Manchester area that I live it was honestly awful. You could listen for hours and hear nothing but garbage.
Also, on VHF/UHF, no one ever used their call signs, making it difficult for newcomers. Each chat was like a little exclusive group.
Ten years earlier when I first started there was none of it. I’d love to start up again but fear nothing has changed. Maybe it has I don’t know.

That’s why HF is a better option as are satellites or even our new geo bird qo100, there’s a repeater on the ISS now so plenty to get your teeth into

£25 will get you started on the hills

At home you could use a used mobile vhf/uhf with an aerial and PSU for maybe £150

Or spend 6K !

I was surprised how good the little Baofeng was. Yes a FT70D is nicer but in use no-one else could tell the difference.

Well that’s not expensive at all! I really don’t want to spend a ton of money on hardware and then find I don’t use it so that’s not bad :)
