I think one of the big appeals of what three words is it simplifies co-ordinates. I'm very comfortable with a co-ordinate but I'm sure there are many that aren't - telling them that they can either use three words or a string of numbers, I can see why it has been accepted well.
One of the points to be borne in mind when passing judgement on "W3W" is that many of the people who pass said judgement know how to read a map and understand 6 figure refs and such. We are not its target user group.
I understand what you are saying - but just reading out six numbers makes as much sense as reading out three totally random words; the person passing on the information from the phone does not have to understand the code.
It was flaunted as a world-wide system - so can someone tell me please if the words in a non-English speaking country are in English or native? Either way, there's another big area for confusion (pronunciation and translation). Although, of course, OS Locate only works in the UK anyway.
I suppose one of my worries is that having an app like this on a phone makes people with little or no training take more risks and, when they need it, it lets them down. There are plenty of areas in Wales where there is no phone connection still.
The idea behind "112Suomi" was /is that it would be used in an emergency only as telling where you are is the main problem this should be done automatically if possible. I guess almost all phones have the capability now (I know, granny's phone from 2010 does not). The position given is easy to transfer to the map.
I honestly don't know, can ask. But expect tens of thousands.
In my company, employee harm is not acceptable, so this system is priceless. Every company car/van/phone/fob has a GPS and sim tracker, that's why people can be made aware and be redirected at a moments notice. Forgot to say contracted staff have it too, so >2000 employees are contactable.
Sence putting the system in, we have been rated by HSE as the safest company to work for, and we cover the of the south east of England.
Reading the blurb for What3Words makes me think that the outdoor types aren't the target - it gives police and ambulance services exact positions even down to a single room in a house. For urban emergencies I suspect it will be a lot more useful.
So, with both on my phone, I suspect I may be tempted to use What3Words in the street and OS Locate in the wild - as long as I don't take too long deciding which to use

Don't forget there's also panic pressing the power button on iphones and other phones to auto bring up dialling for emergency help. Obviously not as good as the system Gra uses but it's something I've looked at for lone workers.
112 even says it needs WGS84 datum and looks like it uses degrees and then minutes/decimal minutes. Which is not logical but is.
Come think even the OS APP probably has a WGS>OS coordinate converter as I think few SatNav chips give out anything but WGS84.
If it's the app I'm thinking of it doesn't give any tools to send the grid reference to others (I could be wrong); the OS app does the same but provides more tools including compass. messaging interface, and a direct link to OS maps.
What I think would be most useful is an app that sends a grid reference at the push of a button. My car is equipped with that as part of it's basic sat nave so you can call out recovery so why not on a smart phone.
I asked about the price of our lone worker subscription, and only £24 a year per unit for the fobs around the neck, so this is really cheap. The mobile app is cheaper, asked for a price, will be able to let you know tomorrow.Thanks; probably beyond our budget then

Exactly what "112Suomi" does. It sends out WGS84 based position reference. In somewhat strange format as said.
An app basically cannot be used unless it is running, ie. "open", it is possible to have a button that works straight away but then the app is running in the background. Besides I think that would cause a lot of miscalls. In this app you open it from your tabletop and then push the button. So far the experience tells that the arrangement works.
