So I had a short spare moment today in between screaming babies, so with my lovely wife holding the Fort and sun shining, I quickly grabbed the video camera.

I prepared a willow board and drill 2 months ago and it has been fast seasoning on the back shelf of the car, it was perfect....

With alot of help from the wind and panic settings in again.....why does it do that???

I managed three fires in 2 minutes 34 seconds....i honestly don't think I will ever do that again, and glad it was on camera :)

woooooaaaaaaah! That's insane, awesome job! Jeez that's going to be really tough for anyone to beat that
I cannot believe it myself, I honestly didn't realise just how quick it was, in the panic I dropped a bit of the lit charcloth from the flint and steel bit and then the wind knocked over my bowdrill ember and nest, but luckily all good still :)

Congratulations to gra_farmer! Even if he was the only member to bring an entry to the table, I wholeheartedly believe that he put in an astonishing time and I'm super impressed, I think he well deserves the 1st place and top prize of the file knife. It's all yours buddy. PM in bound ;)

I am a failure with low tech fire making. Ferro rod is really very high tech. An interesting challenge these days might be not to go back to pre industrial times so much as to the coal age and matches. I was quite adept at lighting a household fire, with a match, scrumpled newspaper, kindling and perhaps if I was being lazy a zippo firelighter. In those days of course matches were matches, Englands glory and all that. Just try to light so much as a candle with a match these days and the phosphorous is gone before the thing strikes, matches are not what they used to be.

I bought one of those Sheperds/Sailors lighters to try out recently and to be honest I will stick to ferro rods and the trusty zippo.

I always carry a ferro rod, I have not lit a fire or candle with a match or lighter for over 8 years, all started when I had trouble lighting propane torches to do controlled burning management trials of links golf courses....see the link below....

setting fire to England's number one golf course was all in the name of science.....honestly
