I mind going to the Dentist as a child and being lectured beforehand on how to behave and how not to behave.
No crying, no biting, no kicking, sit very still, don't moan or distract the Dentist, do exactly as you are told, if you don't then the pain will be worse....we'd call that child abuse nowadays !
I wouldn't eat sweeties for years because the Dentist said they caused me to need the filling.
I am very glad indeed that modern dentistry exists :)

I suspect that the no cooling, antiseptic or anti-inflammatory additions keeps it simple, and relatively cheap, and stops it hitting the 'don't put anything on a burn' bit in first aid.

Sounds you were a very active/unruly child!

The 'no biting' rule I like! Does happen patients clamp together. Muscle reaction. We are used to it.
But as soon as they do, they realize and release.
I know a guy from my Faculty, in the same year, that lost one of his fingers, a child bit it so hard the bone and joint shattered so badly they had to amputate. A very important finger, the one next to his thumb on his working hand.
Later they had to remove the whole finger system, all the way up to the wrist, so his middle finger ( the one used to give 'the inger' to fellow motorists) became his finger closest to the thumb.

I think it has to do with the pharmaceutical laws. To make a cream like I described would probably push it into the 'prescription only' sphere.
