Is anybody else out there watching this? With all the recent Game Of Thrones hype it nearly slipped under my radar thinking it was just another documentary. Haven't been this horrified since I saw Threads as a kid in 1984

Spoiler Alert:

The show pulls no punches about radiation poisoning. Viewers of a nervous disposition should probably avoid finding clips on Youtube.

It’s outstanding! Recently voted the highest scoring tv series in history on IMDb etc.

I’ve got today’s episode downloaded on my tablet, I’ll be going to the pub with my dog later to watch it.

I’ve got a copy of ‘threads’ on dvd. It’s fasinating, I did a module during my OU degree in the ‘prescriptions of nuclear strategy’, I’m obsessed with it still after all these years.

I've seen the first two episodes and think it is phenomenal! Threads scared me to death as a kid and growing up with 99 Red balloons playing int he background, nothing makes to you look back fondly on the mutually assured destruction through total nuclear war with rose coloured spectacles like this does. I remember this happening and Welsh Lamb becoming as popular as a shotgun in Barclays bank. I am looking forward to watching the rest - it is brutal.

It struck me that the selfish party members could have done more but tried to save their own careers first - nothing changes.

Yeah, got the latest episode to watch later.

Surprisingly the three heroes that drained the tanks, only one of them has died since and was not related to the radiation exposure.

Also assume people are familiar with Bionerd23's youtube channel? https://www.youtube.com/user/bionerd23

Tawny owl clip in the Chernobyl wild zone.

Sadly, all three died.
Bodies placed in lead coffins which were soldered shut.
Those three knew they would die, but did it anyway

They saved untold number of people, then, now and in the future.

But many sources say they died within weeks?

Weird that there is info out there that differs so radically, but that is the nature of those countries, then and now, I guess....

Even the numbers of who died of the initial team are unsure.

I had no clue that Stakka Bo, who directs it, is so good!!!

The 3 you are thinking of are probably these

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokaimura_nuclear_accident

Whilst fukushima and chernobyl are terrible the likk above shows you the Harry Potter world of nuclear fission fusion and how effing unimaginable it is. 2 buckets of stuff and pop, checkov radiation blue flashes 2 heads. Glowing at night radiation emmisions etc etc.

I believe most who died at chernobyl whre the firemen who built the concrete containmen. No where near as bad as could have been, only the lightweight isotopes escaped, uranium plutoniun neptunium kept in the blob on the floor. Bear in mind 1 atom of the above can kill easily.

i went to chernobyl and spent 3 days with american researchers, french radiation workers and ukrainian workers.
Our guide kept trying to get us to 'buy' his lady friend.
We spent 58 hours in the zone total and covered a LOT of it. I have some photos online if anyone is interested?
My radiation dose was monitored (by myself) and most of my dose came from cosmic gamma on the flight there and back.

Thanks for this, I've had a quick scan and it looks amazing, I'll have a proper read once I've left work.

The rest of the site looks interesting too, especially the deep bunker stuff, love it.

Have you been to hack Green?

Did you measure the radiation? How is it, still bad?

I did, some areas were fairly warm, and the odd localised hot spot.

My overall dose I tracked with an automess ad6150 dosimeter and although I can’t recall the dose off hand - most of it came from the flight there and back.
But yeah there were some no go areas due to the radiation risk

As a matter of interest, what type of radiation was there?
Theres huge differences in the relative biological effectiveness between gamma rays (RBE of 1) and alpha particles with an RBE of 20.
Alpha particles can be stopped by a bit of paper but you don't want them in your body.

IIRC beta particles have an RBE of 1 and neutrons RBE is 10.

It was a long time ago that I worked as an industrial radiographer so I may have remembered it wrong.
