Here’s my 2p.

Find the sounds you like, then find the way to reproduce them. Learning to play an instrument can be an interesting and very lengthy process.

By nature, my instrument spirit animals are breath instruments and percussion. What happened was more to do with what I enjoyed listening to, than what I was naturally more gifted at playing. As a result, i’ve never been a great guitar player even though I enjoy playing.

So don’t be put off choosing a flute, drums, harp, piano.... or guitar ... or all of them, if you derive pleasure from what happens when you play them.

Flutes are very portable. Tin flutes, you know, what the Irish play on, have a very pleasant ‘voice’, imo.

When they're played properly; mine just sounds like a cheap recorder being played by a six year old (that's probably being insulting to some six year olds )

How about a digeridoo? They sound amazing in a camp environment.

I brought back a large one from Cairns a number of years ago (best part of 5' tall and in C). It's a rhythm instrument really rather than melody but the variety of sounds a good player can make is quite unbelievable.

Whenever I hear the sound of a didgeridoo, I can't help but think of Rolf Harris and a campsite full of crusties...

It's got to be a guitar or Ukelele/Banjo in my opinion these are the only musical instruments you can play without knowing an actual song, just a few chords and a bit of strumming and away you go..................................plenty of help available on the web for free too................if you can pluck a chicken you can pluck a guitar.

I have loads of instruments non of which I can play well but I joined a folk club and started to play the Irish drum (can never spell bodrahn so won't try)then a penny whistle and a ukulele followed by a jembe drum and guitar . I love the drum and am thinking of getting a handpan. This is drumming with a tune. They sound great. Might be worth a look.

(No, not the reason she's former.)

Whatever instrument you go for, enjoy it: creating and playing music is great, even if only for yourself. And you can pick up some theory as you go if that's what you want.

I hereby revoke the Namedrop Rule. I was taught to play by Steve Rye ex Groundhogs etc. Your ex would definitely disapprove.

hopefully.

I use them for ‘Neighbour Wrangling’ as they are far more effective at ‘opening their third eye...man’ when necessary, than a car alarm.

I say that if you fancy it, have a go at playing it.
