My first hammer

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I like the design shape.
Is there a practical range of weights for blacksmithing hammers?
Thanks. 2 - 3lbs is about right depending on your build. A 2-3lb you could swing all day but the heavier you go the quicker you'll wear yourself out.
Also the heavier the hammer the more material you'll move, so it's a bit of a trade off

No not yet. I was hoping to have a go tonight after putting the little one to bed but it's peeing it down now!!!! It's been lovely all day and now I wanna play it starts raining!!!

Best laid plans, and all that... Still, you'll get many years of use from it, and the best tools are the ones you make yourself (but of course you'll be fully aware of this already!).

What sort of smithing do you do?
