My mate in North Devon spotted this in his local woods , any ideas what it is ? I thought some kind of animal trap ??

I reckon it is a trap. Probably something meant to kill glis glis or grey squirrels. That last shot looks like it shows a trigger plate down inside. If it was a next tube for little dormice, it wouldn't make sense to have such a large opening, nor that the entrance would funnel rain back into the tube.

I still think it is a dormouse nest tube, here is an example of a very silmilar nest tube of the net which shows the wooden insert and I think picture number two makes it look more diagonal than what it is.

Yep. Dormouse trap for surveying them. I was speaking to someone while they were doing a survey of hazel dormice here a couple of weeks ago as I wondered what they were up to. :)
 
Fair play. Learned something. The last time I saw nest boxes put out for dormice, they didn't look anything like those, more like bird boxes.
