Does anyone know who made the long back Bergen.
Thinking about changing to one due to the little extra capacity.

Sorry my fault should have made it clear. I already have one but curious as to who made them. Appears to be well made.
Does anyone use one if so what do you think to it.

Go here http://www.britishmilitarysurplus.co.uk/shop/hardwear/british-army-infantry-bergen-1124037.html

And buy one for £35.00 There tough bits of kit so don't be put off by the fact their grade 1, you can request a long back during the order process.

I got issued one as well as one of the short backs. The short ones are better for anyone less than 6ft really and have the same amount of space just a bit wider. The other arms bergans aren't worth the hassle unless you want to take them in your car since that's all they were really made for.

The short and long back both have the same capacity of 120litres, the short back is wider and shorter than the long back but they are both the same carry size. The long back is narrower accross the the back. Hope that helps. The shorter back is only really comfortable when worn with webbing as it rides on top of it and only reaches down above the pouches hence it's name. the Longback can be worn with or without webbing but was not as comfortable when used with webbing. You will find most British army packs now fit into to this mode especially things like the NI patrol pack which is alos designed to be used with webbing and has a shorter back than most civilian equivelants.

hope this info is usefull to you John and if you have any questions about the kit just let me know.

I have used one in a variety of capacities for many years. Very well made, quite a nice design, but never really comfortable, especially when loaded anywhere near to their capacity. As is inferred above, they are designed to be used with webbing, so the 'waist' belt comes above the webbing, and is more designed to stop the bergen slipping off the rear pouches and stop bounce when running than to transfer any weight to your hips in its own right.

Can be made relatively comfortable when used with a well put together set of webbing, but will only ever be a compromise without webbing. If you like the capacity/design you best bet would be to get a second hand military style bergen such as a Berghaus Vulcan or a Lowe Alpine - which have decent back systems and weight supporting hip belts.

If however you will only be carrying your kit for a few miles in it, or will not be loading it to its capacity, you should be just fine.
