- Gather appropriate materials
- Lay it properly
- Prepare a tinder bundle
- Light it
- Manage the fire they just lit
?

Should be taught in the first year of primary school if you ask me!

Next up: knife safety and the basics of carving. By the time she's 7, I'll have her selecting her own wood, sawing it to obtain the best length of its grain, splitting it, and carving spoons from the split lengths

great stuff mate my boy is 7 and hes favourite thing to do in the woodland is gather the materials and maintain the fire , he had a hulafors safety tip knife for Christmas and is just getting use to knife skills

Yeh my kids had the fire service in to do talks and i got a lecture from mine about putting the matches where they cant get em ..............................

They did think when I said how can i ask you to get them if you cant reach when I need em

It's great being out teaching the kids stuff they get so much out of it and being outdoors in fresh air.it should defiantly be taught in schools I'm lucking my daughter picks scouts for her Friday afternoon activity at school she really gets so much out of it and the school are proud of there association with scouts and realise the benefits of kids getting out and even allowing them fire lighting and shelter building,archery,climbing etc.

you and your daughter will have years of good memory's that'll last a life time

well done to all parents who teach these skills.

my son is only 6 months so a little while to wait yet (though I have made him a tiny canoe paddle already!). I have however taught several 8 year old cub scouts knife skills. some had barely held even a kitchen knife before but its amazing how quickly they take to it.

keep the first aid kits near as little thumbs are determined to get nicked. I do like the hultafors safety tipped knives for kids as the sharp point on normal knives does seem to find its way into thumbs and nicks clothing like nobody's business.
