Anyone have a full length down UB ?
I'd appreciate any feedback and sources . Ukhammocks seem to be the only UK suppliers apart from Unsponserd s occasional one .
Cheers

I think you have hit the nail on the head, as far as I know Mat is the only UK supplier apart from a couple of independent makers.
I got a winter top and bottom quilt off Mat in his summer sale, very well made and nice and toasty, pack down small as well.
Worth the investment if you use them often enough I'd say.
Plenty of choice across the pond but then I always get hit for import duty so probably not much savings to be had.

yep ive a full length winter UQ from matt. Good bit of kit but find the hanging system a bit poor and the elastic too thin for serious cold. Good overall warmth though

Expeds do work in the hammock, but out of choice and comfort a thick padded down or synthetic underquilt is well worth getting.

Until someone else starts up, I think Matt is the best choice ATM. Down is still best but it will cost-the cost price of decent goose down is shocking.

An issue with down is its compression rate, you get on it and it goes flat fast and absorbs body moisture. Don't get me wrong and this is pretty much guesswork on my part as I don't use hammocks but I'm thinking a synthetic under quilt or cell mats may be a better a solution. Even two tightly rolled cell mats whilst bulky perhaps would offer a lot of winter insulation and weigh next to nowt? Anyone tried this?

A properly hung underquilt doesnt compress Rik. Its differentially cut to shape to the hammock. CCF Mats do work well but can leave the shoulders cold

An underquilt is suspended under the hammock Richard so there's zero compression.

I have a couple of Mats quilts, plus a Hammock Gear 20*F Incubator and a JRB Sierra Sniveller, all do the job very well. The two US imports pack smaller than Mats but that's more to do with the amount of fill, I made sure when Mat made me my winter UQ that I would never be cold in UK temps.

Cheers Rik , I've had a few hangs in sub zero. I normally use a long yoga mat , then line my hammock with a homemade sheepskin blanket. I've not had much trouble apart from the occasional cold shoulder.....from swmbo aswell lol.

I'm wanting something as a complete solution for this winter , while I have still a few bob in my pocket.
Cheers

Looks like it's a job for Mat then.....I know he uses only the best down and always better to support British Businesses imo.
Shame he doesn't offer a bcuk discount , considering all the support he receives from forum .

Mats are a few quid each, have you thought about cutting to shape for the shoulders? As said this is all guess work on my part but it seems to make more sense than lugging a quilt about? Perhaps a project for the DIY members here? Just out of curiosity I'd like to see the comparative results.

Sounds like an Segmented Pad Extender, some comparison with the underquilt here.

Yep, a segmented mat is an option. I tried one of my own making of sorts but found it a faff to get in the right place in the hammock and then movement once in the hammock would result in cold spots. You lose some of the comfort. Top and bottom quilts don't weigh much more than a sleeping bag, less than some and compress pretty small so for the warmth and ease of use plus the comfort its quilts for me

I made a ccf mat with attached wings for shoulders , arms . It was a cheap mat and preety bulky when packed.....infact very bulky. Did the job , but I was close to the jeep, otherwise I wouldn't have wanted to haul it.

That's where I took the inspiration from for creating my gaffa tape winged pad .

Now reading through ......im going underblanket for sure.....all the pluses are there , I don't need to go to ground unless I want to , in that scenario , I'd be biviing and have my thermarest with me. The final plus is , for a short period of time , I reckon I can afford it , even though my jeep is parked on the drive needing attention Arrrrgh . Sod it .....Mat's hammock emporium .....here I come . Cheers all
