Waterproofing help

Can anyone help me with this....... My missus thought my waterproof, breathable walking shoes were looking a bit grubby so she flung em in the washing machine on hot with a shed load of detergent, well there still breathable but need waterproofing.
Cant find anything on the net specific to footwear, can I use a goretex type wash in like the Nikwax or what do you reckon.
