Then put your sleeping bag inside you bivvie bag and RAMSTAMPSTUFF the bag in the bottom of your bag,(I put my spare clothes under it in an extra dry bag) I have carried this for many miles in relative comfort:),

that works for me too, although my dry bag of spare clothes goes on top of my sleeping bag. i always used to put my sleeping bag in an issue compression bag and my bivi bag in it's own little stuff sack, stuffing it all in together as it is keeps it all just as dry and takes up pretty much the same amount of space but for a lot less effort and a bit less weight

Thank you guys for all your valuable input, have lined the inside of the pack with deflated mat, sleeping bag stuffed at bottom everything else packed carefully on top in stuff sacks. Rest of bag packed with a little space to boot!
You people are like the oricle!:notworthy.
All packed for 3/4 days walking and sleeping!
Many thanks
What do you guys think of the Berghaus vulcan- this may be my next purchase after my trip! Got short back web-tex bergen at moment!

My reasoning for clothes under is,

1, I dont have to get them out to get my gonk out,

2, when i do need them ie fresh pants, i would have my sleeping bag out anywhooooo

3, if i needed to change in a hurry ie after falling in water or being stupid and putting water proofs before getting soaked, then I would want my bivvi bag and sleeping bag out to insulate me from the ground and possibly to get into once changed,

I have a main drybag for the whole main compartment then everything in there is also in its own dry bag, redundancy is never redundant:)

I dont use the compression sack so the sleeping bag\bivvie combo can form to the shape of the bag,

I carry my roll mat in the compression straps on one side with my walking pole stuck in the middle when not in use
I don't use side pockets usually anyway so its fine
I think you would be best to keep your sleeping bag inside pack and another waterproof protector or some type(binliner or drybag) for protection from elements and rips etc anyway.
The elite 5 is 2.5Kg or something like that That's quite a heavy bag but toasty in winter I bet
You could try just having the lighter bits under main pack

Good stuff, glad it all fits :)

not dis-agreeing with your approach at all dude, horses for courses and all that:)

i use a thermarest usually and the dry bag of spare clothes nicely fits into the same level as the thermarest.

i don't use one dry bag as a liner, i use two, the bottom one has sleeping bag/bivi bag, thermarest, and dry bag of spare clothes (all my warm stuff), the other one has everything i need to eat (waterproofs go in their own dry bag on top of everything else) and tools/basha go in the lid pocket, i agree entirely about redundancy:)

when i come to set up at night i start with my basha (obviously) then thermarest, spare clothes, and food bag get hung from my ridge line, once bivi bag and sleeping are out i unroll my thermarest on top of my bivi bag to decompress for a bit, clothes bag becomes a pillow, and the food bag gets investigated.

i ditched the compression sack for the same reason as you, it gets rid of the dead space in my pack.

by the sound of it mate we have more or less the same approach with a few minor tweeks to fit our own kit better, interesting to be honest
