"WINSCARIS" a mystery useful plant?

Hi i was out in the woods today and met an old man we had a nice chat about bushcraft and food you can find in the woods he mentioned a plant called "Winscaris" has anyone heard of it?
it may be a tree bush or even a flower he didn't know, but it was collected by his relatives to make into a drink.
(it may also be the wrong spelling, or hyphenated)
