First attempt at broadheads. Made from farrier rasps, and forged into shape.

Bedded in with epoxy and awaiting sinew wrapping...

Very nice heads, a little sacrilegious to glue with epoxy and then wrap with sinew perhaps??? :D

Granted, but I didn't have any hide glue to hand. As these are early attempts i was just keen to crack on and see how they perform...It was the heads that were important in this case.

Pine pitch+bees wax or charcoal instead of epoxy.
Definitely something wrong with using sinew and epoxy ;) :lmao:

They look good. How much do they weigh?

Nice broadies. I bet they are heavy, they'd make nice warbow arrows :) .

Didn't intend to sound harsh. They are excellent broadheads, just considerably thicker than the norm. I'll be very interested in his report of how they perform. The only time I've made broadheads is from an old saw and they were about a mm thick.

I didn't take you as being harsh, Buddy. They are slightly thicker than a hacksaw blade, but then they are forged in the old tradition. Surprisingly they weigh less than 1 oz...

They will be shot from a 50# oak ELB...but into what???

Nice work as ususal stovie.

The kite shaped tanged points are very much like my mongolians.

Shame the only place you can shoot them 'officially' is a roving mark.

On the glue issue: we had a problem when we were coming to a definition for primitive bows and arrows for the NFAS as we decided that we should write in that modern glues and strings were allowed. I suppose as a reflection on the fact that time and materials are not so abundant and a hunter culture would sactifice an arrow (and maybe even a bow) for a dead animal that would feed the tribe for a week without a second thought. It's a bit of a shame when you are target shooting to loose a point every time you shoot ;)

Make sure you protect the sinew with something. Shellac (readily available as button polish) if you want to be natural. If it gets at all damp it will strip as it goes into a boss.- voice of experience.

;)

They are really beautiful Stovie. I do love archery gear - the only thing that prevents me really getting into archery is (lack of) talent!

Been preparing the sinew today...

Now I know nowt about archery mate, but didn't Henry V say

The Bard of Avon said:
In peace there ’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood.

They don't look very stiff :D

Oh, and I rather think it was "once more unto the breach"

Sorry Nerd moment there

I'll get me cloak :)

Stripping sinew is character building isn't it  . Being metal it doesn't have to wrapped with sinew. You could use linen thread then varnish it to protect it.
