The Advantages of A flintlock Gun for Long Term Wilderness Living/Survival.

I find all this talk of "Humane killing" some what amusing, unless things have changed since I left it is perfectly legal to blast away with your shot gun at fox's rabbits pigeons pheasant ducks geese etc etc Are their lives worth less than a deer? I also find it amusing all the folk who are...

Found a dead deer in a ditch

If you boil the lower part of the leg (the part with no meat) long enough the sinews, hide, hoofs etc dissolve, then you end up with hair and bones in a brown liquid, which you can render down into glue, be warned the missus will not be happy if you do this in the house :)

Other than the screw on lid (Which I like) is there any advantage to these over the DIY coke can stoves?

    Available fuel

Mineral spiritsis not methylated spirits, it is more "oily" and used as paint thinner/brush cleaner, but in Canada denatured alcohol is sold as "gas line antifreeze" (removes moisture from petrol) and is easily available.

Just found a muntjac deer on the road - need advice please!

From experience with deer here in Canada the sooner you get the innards out the better, just like doing a rabbit but bigger,

    Ice fishing tips

The hand lines they sell for fishing off a pier will work, like KK said your hauling them in. we use "smelt" as well or the biggest minows we can get, rig it with a float so the bait is about 6" off bottom, watch the float close when it starts to dip set the hook (or try to :) ) when the fish...

    THe survival experts know nowt:)

I love the entertainment I get here! :) first a few comments from personal experience. I always carry several "Bic" lighters, but if they get cold they don't work. zippo's do if they have a flint and fuel. I can guaranty you fit people sweat less and need to drink way less to stay hydrated. A...

    A pilgrims Journey, Mark Baker.

I attended several talks he gave last year , very interesting. He is a great believer in learning by doing, even if you fail at first. I know the following link is the wrong side of the pond but figured I'd post it anyway. http://store.scurlockpublishing.com/apilgrimsjourneybymarkabaker.aspx

    traditional bush baby fodder?

I might add it is instinct for small children to stuff everything in their mouths, if it tastes good they eat it if bad they spit it out, So through a proses of natural selection over the years we have evolved as kids to dislike what is bad for us. Those that didnt--died.

    Solo overnighter

Nice pictures thanks for sharing. Deer (at least in Canada) make scrapes when they mark their territory almost always under the edge of a tree or bush. The males paw the ground and pee on it to leave sent behind. The hair looks like its from some kind of deer to me, deer hair is usually much...

Suspending a non-suspendable pot over a wood fire --- ideas please

Pots heat much quicker when over the heat instead of beside. A pot that is hung is way safer than set on rocks or logs I drill two holes and either simply run a wire through them for a bail or rivet tabs on then put the bail through the tabs, that way you can still put a lid on. If your drilling...

    making leather - some questions

Even off a moose or elk one hide isnt big enough, I made a dress for my wife, it took three hides from mature mule deer. the "Outside" of the hide the side you remove the hair from is the side you would make "shiny" someone else will have to tell you how to do that
