My little brother used to be in a saxon re-enactment group adn one year I made him a wool cap to go under his helmet. Here's how I did it:

1) gather a load of wool from fences and hedges, if you find brown / black wool keep it seperate. Wash the grease off it and card it (you can use either teasles or a pair of hedgehogs if you want to be really bushcraft)

2) make a drop spindle and spin it into as good a thread as you can.

3) knit it into a triangle, if you found some different coloured wool use it for a bit of decoration as a band. Once it's big enough sew it up to make a 'stocking cap'.

I wish I'd made another so I could wear it when doing bushcraft. much more stylish than those I see in shops.
