This is a very rare and precious wood it is spanish Briar root, its the stuff the old fashioned pipes are made from, and the material i am to use for a knife i am making for a friend of mine.
This briar is classed as VERY TIGHT GRAIN PLATEAUX which is the cream of the best at an eye watering €112+shipping per block big enough for a leuku knife,i was fortunate in that i am to make a knife for the briar man in return for 3 pieces of it.

Nice wood there Justin, I have 4 blocks of it myself. Though, not sure if mine is spanish or not but it is briar root/burl. Yours is a bit darker in colour than mine. :)

Are you making the blade for the knife? :)

For comparison, here is two blocks of Finnish curly birch resting over a table made of regular birch. The darker one is heat-treated. A block will fetch for around four euro.

And is very common and not at all special in comparison to a rare, hard to find, highly sought after wood. :) The properties of the two are very different also.

Like comparing 01 to damasteel :)

Yes but even humble curly birch has it's charmes when it's used in a nice knife I find:)

Its not very common as knife wood, more for pipes. But yes, it is fairly heavy for its size and it is very hard to make an impression with a finger nail.

Here is the only knife i have used it on so far.

So is brial wood burl particularly dense and hard as well, or is it just on looks and rarity?

Lovely wood indeed. Are you likely to be making yourself a pipe from your trade?

Good luck with whatever you use it for, and fingers crossed no sandpits.
