winter tree identification

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
That's a useful blog post though to be honest when I identify trees it is more often shape and form of tree which is a function of the way the buds form that leads to ID from the far side of the field long before you can see bud or bark. This is much the same as we all identify birds mostly by flight pattern rather than detail. A rook just acts very different to a pigeon even when silhouetted. So too an ash is very open in form and twigs bud in widely spaced opposing pairs, alder has a dense crown which shows the purple bloom of it's buds this time of year you would find them along streambanks or in stands in wet woodland and so on.
