Hey One and All,

As always I hope my message finds you well?

A little idea that I am trying to implement this year that will increase my knowledge of my local surrounding and hopefully it will inspire you to do the same.

Would love to know if you have tried anything similar, or maybe if you had any hints or tips that could be helpful?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts and knowledge.

Cheers,

Brook

Hi Brook,

A food wheel is a great idea. Some Aboriginal communities (in Australia) have published seasonal calendars. These are not "limited" to food, but can cover all manner of activities related to living in their environment.
The idea of a calendar or wheel is a modern one, traditionally this would probably have been maintained as a series of ceremonies involving stories etc ...

Of course they did not use months (Jan, Feb Mar etc) or seasons (Winter, Spring etc), but used changes in nature to signal the availability of resources:
for instance when particular coastal plant flower, it may be time to travel to the mountains to exploit a resource or conduct a ceremony in a particular area.

Here area couple of links to hopefully give you a few ideas:

There are many examples to peruse online

Hi Brook,

I use an Excel spreadsheet. The months are laid out as headings across the top and I list wild plants down the vertical axis. Moving across from the name of the plants, I fill the cells with color for the months when they are available.

I then print the chart an pin it to my bulletin board.
