wild camping advice

I wonder if someone can help?

I've been camping for years but now the kids are up I've decided to be a bit more adventourous and started wild camping.

Are there rules for this, I've been told you can't in England but you can in Scotland, but I've just returned from the Isle of Mull where we were told by someone very angry to get off his land, confused.
