Seeing the post on where to camp on soggy moorland I was reminded of how difficult it was to find a picnic spot with the family. Years back We had great difficulty in finding decent picnic spots in forests and woods. Bivvying or camping is different but just to find a spot to sit down with family and picnic bag. If a grassy clearing it is likely to be damp and cold as is leaf mould elsewhere along with so many spiky thistly stinging things. Reason for otherwise unsightly picnic benches and the like or to lug picnic chairs which cut down the pleasure of walking through forests like The New, Epping and Savernake. In contrast the Downs offered masses of sheltered comfy turf.

You could get yourself a shooting stick? Doubles as a seat & stick with the ability to poke and prod things too.

I used mine a fair bit on walks when I wasn't very well as I needed to stop a fair bit and also had trouble getting up off of the ground if I sat there.

Like in the other post you mentioned I said that you get an eye in for these things. Bit more difficult if you have kids with you I suppose. Years of working in the woods and having my lunch with me was a real picnic. If there were stumps you could use one as a seat. In the lee of a tree gives a bit of shelter, and buttresses or other raised roots, low branches can be a grand seat.

Depends on the type of woodland though, open deciduous like a beech wood usually has suppressed ground foliage and beech mast is comfy to sit on. Furrow planted pine/fir/spruce plantations can be a bit closed in and often on poor ground, but the furrows can act as a seat if you find an area with an opening or where a "wolf" tree has suppressed the other.

You could also try making a cantilever seat with some tubing and a strap to go around the tree (made on years ago as an experiment) or one of those cheap net hammock that fit in a pocket can be an OK seat too.
