We have got a great deal on flights to NZ in the spring. I am looking for suggestions of what would be good and bushcrafty to bring back for myself. Can only think of Swanndri at the moment. Any other suggestions?

maybe a Swazi Tahr Jacket, just dont tell me how much you get it for, although i was lucky i paid woodlore £250 days before they put the price up by about £40/50.

Colin...:red:

If you've got time look for swannie stuff in any charity shops.

I bet you'll pick up some of the old stuff when it was made in NZ for a fraction of the price.

If I remember right they have a copper version of a kelly kettle out there, bring as many of those back as you can lay your hands on :)

Johnboy lives out there Fred so he's the man to ask; IIRC swanni's are much the same price there.

Look out for Fairydown jackets and sleeping bags.

Kia Ora Fred,

Taking a quick break from opening presents here in NZ..

Ok Swazi Tahr jackets.. last time I looked about a month ago it was cheaper to buy the RM Tahr from woodlore than get one here. I did email Swazi pointing this fact out but they never got back to me...

I'd say you have a better choice of 'bushcraft kit' in the UK than we do here TBH. Although we might have a bit more bush.... 'top drawer' branded stuff is as costly here as in the UK.

Swannies do pop up in charity shops but often in Interesting colours so don't bet on that Olive Green Ranger in XL with minimal wear. Kit here is expensive to buy for us so stuff gets used lots and stuff that makes it to charity shops is usually pretty worn out at least that's my experience.

I'd take a look in all of the hunting and fishing shops we have the kit there is pretty good for example you can get a 6 pack of green fleece kit ( fleece top, fleece trousers etc) for about $100.00.

Copper Thermettes are here, the original ones are all in used nick and hold their value well but you can get a Chinese made one by 'campmaster' which is functional but a bit ugly it's also expensive...

You should also look at the kit made by Huntec it's pretty good especially the fly and the bivvy they do...

If you fancy a trip into the Bush then I'm happy to meet up and we could sort that out..

Just Drop me a PM

Many thanks folks, especially Johnboy, for all those great ideas. I will have to have a careful think as my funds will be limited. Obviously I need a holiday just going round the hunting shops and the charity shops. Hmmm wonder how my wife will take that. All the way to NZ to look around charity shops?

A Very Happy Christmas to one and all:christmas1:

Thermettes are good. If you need a rucksack, it's definitely worth looking at stuff made by Cactus Climbing - really, really tough, unfussy, fully functional rucksacks that come in a bombproof canvas-type fabric. Their daypack - the Miklat - comes highly recommended; I'm currently saving up for one of their bigger load-carriers, the Whare. Top kit.

if you can go to Huka Falls and take a ride on the Huka Jet
http://www.hukafalls.com/huka_jet_boat.php

we did that when i went a few years ago - it is brilliant fun!

i also reccomend Rotorua and Lake Taupo!

there is a wood worker near the Huka jet who makes all manner of things. - i got a spinning top when i went as i was only 13 but he had some truly great stuff!

cant reccomend anything else im afraid.

Paua shell :D
A friend brought me one back from a climbing holiday there. It has made some beautiful pieces of jewellery
Or some of the Maori carved *fish hook* pendants :)

I know, I'm a girl :sigh: :o

Your Missus will appreciate it though, and might even not mind you looking through all those shops :D

cheers,
M
