What is he making?

Hello,

in another Bushcraft forum someone posted the following link about traditional finnish wood working:

Does someone of you know, what kind of thing he is making from 27:14 to 30:40?

At first i thought it would be something like a fire piston, but then he worked around with something that looked like hair or fur. So i wonder what strange kind of thing that may be But it looks very interesting though, and the skills of the makers are superb.

Googling plotkapyssy it seems like it is a toy gun that can shoot little pebbles. Looks cool and his skills are awesome.

If you are refering to him using the pine tree, i think what he was making is a handle for tools such as chisels/knives and such like, as i,ve seen it done else where.

Sorry i just watched the whole part of the clip, but had'nt before i posted. It may be a toy looking at it now. But as i say i have seen tool handles and fishing floats made using a hollow pine branch, and the method of harvesting was the same as in the clip.

I just had a second thought, may be it is a form of pop gun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_gun.

I had one when i was a child, oh it brings back memories, so it does.

yeah, at first i also thought it would be a handle for a knife or similar. the idea with the toy gun really makes sense, like a tube you blow into but with a piston to compress the air instead.
