I know that we normally highlight companies that go above and beyond, but I thought I would tip you the wink to one that simply doesn’t.

http://www.campingsurvival.com/

As mentioned on a couple of other threads, I’ve been trying to get hold of some small ‘flint bars’ (http://www.campingsurvival.com/flintbar18x2.html) and these are the only people I can find who sell them.

They have been extremely unhelpful, replying to emails (that they obviously haven’t read) with copied text which was irrelevant or, at their most helpful, monosyllabic answers. The final straw was when I asked them if they could dispatch 10g of flint bar to me in a $5 Global Priority Package (as the rest of the US seem to) they said no – P&P would be $106.50!

Avoid them.

Does anyone know there I might get some of the 1/8” x 2” flints from?

Hi Andy,

Yep, I thought of that, but I don’t like to impose, plus I don’t want to give the company any of my hard earned now.

Thanks though

What about the ranger flint that BCB sell? It is the one in the matchless fire sets:

http://www.bcbin.com/Default.aspx?cid=30 (bottom of the page)

You would need to remove the metal frame it is set in but I remember someone else had successfully done this before. (Stuart I think) Without the metal holder it is pretty slim and would probably fit your needs.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that, but I was really after some of the 1/8” thick microsteels. They would fit my new match case well (as they’re the same size as a match) and, what I really want to try; I’m hopping that they might replace the pen in my SAK. It would be great to have a firesteel on the side.

Thanks for the suggestion though

AJB,

Just dug my one out of the cupboard and measured it. The rod is 2 inces long and 1/8th inch wide (5cm x 4mm), so it sounds like it might be the same as the one you tried to order. Looks thicker than a match to me though.

I remember seeing something on one of the matchcase threads about someone keeping one of those plastic Spark-lite in their case. Might be an alternative if you can find one in the UK.

If you do find a source of small firesteels, please post as I would be interested too, for similar reasons.

you cant remove the steel frame on the flints in the matchless fire kits without breaking the rod. whilst I do have a mini flint without the metal frame, I did not successfully remove it from the fame, I simple got one before they were put into the frame.

OK I stand corrected. Sorry, Stuart. Just found your old thread I was thinking about and it was Adi007 who managed to do it :

Interesting thread that one - should give a few ideas for those who are trying to pack their matchcases with useful stuff.
