Just a quick question. I can see there is a safety catch on this rifle, (small red button to rear of spring housing) but I have do idea how it works. It's off at the moment but how do you engage it?

Any ideas greatly appreciated

cock the rifle, it should engage automatically. let us know if that works, if it doesn't it's pretty easy to fix

does the safety catch move? there should be a spring underneath it pushing it back out again, so it should pop back up after you've pressed it in

if the WD40 doesn't work you should be able to mend it pretty easily.

you need to remove the stock first, make sure it's not cocked. there's a couple of screws up through the trigger guard that need to come out, and IIRC, one large screw that goes up through the bottom of the fore-end of the stock, that needs to come out too.
the metal parts should come away from the wooden parts now.
once you've got the rifle in two have a look at the trigger, there's two pins going through the body of the rifle just above the trigger that hold the trigger unit into the rifle, these need to come out so tap them through gently with a hammer and a nail with the end flattened down (or something similar). they should come out pretty easily, if they don't then stop and go to a gunsmith.
once the pins are out the trigger unit should slide out nice and easy.
the trigger is a sealed unit so you don't have to worry about anything flying off or coming loose.
once the trigger unit is out you should be able to slide the safety catch out of the back of the rifle, there should be a small spring behind the safety catch, try not to loose this.
it's possible on a second hand gun that the spring won't be there at all, some people remove them.
it's also possible that the spring has broken with age, a lot of HW35's are getting on a bit now.
if there's no spring, or the spring's broken, then i'm sure you can work out what to do next so i won't insult your intelligence by pointing out the blindingly obvious.
if the spring is still there, and intact, give everything a good clean with a bit of wire wool or similar, add a spot of oil and put it all back together. (re-assembly is so simple that i won't insult your intelligence there either)
if it still doesn't work then i'm afraid i'm stumped and it's probably a trip to the gunsmiths for you.

hope that helps a bit.

WD40 is a crap lubricant... a drop of 3in1 would be a lot better... then work the action a little/lot depending on how badly stuck it is.

The safety on my (circa) 1960's '35 is working fine with irregular care and attention, chances are it's just starved of a little lube ;)

i couldn't agree more, i believe that the reason that WD40 is pretty useless as a lubricant is that it's a really thin oil i.e. very small particles, that's why i suggested it for this job. very thin oil tends to penetrate into seized up areas better than thicker oils, and the workmanship (and therefore tolerances) on weirauchs (spl?) is of an incredibly high standard (as i'm sure you know). a penatrating oil such as WD40 would stand amuch better chance of getting into the action and freeing up the safety catch than a thicker, lubricating, oil. 3 in 1 would be an ideal oil to lubricate the safety catch if it was moving, but if it's just stuck down then it might be tricky to work it into the action.

Just for info, its the very last part of the cocking stroke that engages the safety catch. You should hear the sear angage to hold back the piston; the safety will pop out just after that. If you try to reset the safety once its off, you need to break the barrel and bring it right back to the end of the stroke where you should feel a litte resistance before the safety is reset.

If the clean and lube doesnt work, it could be that you're not pulling the barrel back far enough or that something like a broken main-spring is obstructing that part of the stroke.
